You won't even find any conveyor belts in Uobei: once you place your orders via a multi-language touch screen, the dishes are delivered by high-speed chute, with nary a hint of there being any humans involved in the process. The flavours aren't quite as dazzling as the futuristic presentation, but when you're paying a rock-bottom ¥110 for each item on the menu, it's hard to complain.

At Uobei, prices start at ¥110 (US$0.77) and hover around the ¥150 (US$1.05) mark per pair of nigiri, making this Shibuyakaiten-zushi restaurant the very definition of cheap and cheerful. The multilingual touchscreen menu has hundreds of choices – there are 11 nigiri variations for salmon alone – so it’s ideal for people who prefer choosing exactly what they want to eat. At the other end of the spectrum are low-cost, family-friendly chains like Sushiro and Uobei, where the sushi is delivered via conveyor belts.

Uobei is another chain sushi spot with branches spread all over Japan. Their most popular branch is in the middle of Shibuya, and they are run by the same company that runs Genki Sushi, another popular, affordable sushi spot. However, Genki no longer has branches in Tokyo.

Uobei is one of Shibuya's go-to places for a fun and cheap kaiten sushi experience. It may not as fresh and tasty as Katsu Midori (my first recommendation), but it's still pretty good for the price. It’s certainly better than the average sushi in France, my home country.

Uobei is another restaurant that specializes in conveyor belt sushi. Unlike the previous conveyor belt restaurant that was just mentioned, Uobei does not have food rotating around. You have to order your food from a touchscreen.

The image of sushi is not always one that is budget friendly. But sushi is the original Japanese fast food!. And the best place to try delicious sushi for less is conveyor belt sushi (or kaitenzushi)!

You need to walk up the hill named “Dougen zaka”, from Shibuya Station. As soon as you turn the corner, you might find a line in front of the shop.
