The hype is real, this was actually the best pizza I’ve tried, and it was in Tokyo at Pizza Bar on 38th. They do a pizza omakase, and we got six truly incredible slices. 🙇🏻‍♀️ Their dough is high hydration and 48 hr fermentation. The chew is so good. Paired with local toppings like Hokkaido scallop & cauliflower, mascarpone & shaved black truffle, and my favorite seven cheese with truffle honey....

Reviews Summary

The Pizza Bar on 38th offers a highly acclaimed pizza omakase experience, praised for its innovative flavors, unique crispy dough, and intimate counter setting. While most diners find it exceptional and a must-try, some note that not every pizza course lands perfectly and occasionally wish for more interaction with the head chef.

"What a lovely experience, from start to finish.

Located on the 38th floor of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, The Pizza Bar on 38th is a wonderful pizza omakase experience that you should absolutely add to your itinerary in Tokyo.

While getting a reservation can prove challenging, it is absolutely worth the stop and the money.

From the staff at the front to the chefs to the wait staff, you will not be disappointed. I loved that they had a mocktail pairing which went with the pizzas perfectly. Everything was thought of.

The small setting allows for conversation between diners and chefs, so they are able to talk about how they source the food and what goes into their processes. They make sure you can take photos, too. The toppings change with the seasons and everything is fresh and vibrant.

Pro tip - the view from the women's restroom is fantastic!"

"We were lucky to get a pizza omakase reservation for lunch on our next to last day in Tokyo and it was an overall really great experience. Some people might be divided on whether this is worth the money because it’s just “pizza” but really that’s just simplifying the meal too much. Yes, it is multiple courses of pizza but the ingredients are the highest quality, uncommon and generally the flavor combinations are going to be different than any other pizza you’ve likely had before. I only deducted a star because I feel not every pizza course completely landed with me although most did. Plus, with their farm to table approach, the menu rotates every month and a half so I think definitely worth trying in at least two seasons of the year to see how it compares."

"After trying to book for two people for weeks, I finally managed to get a reservation one day before leaving Tokyo, thanks to the amazing team who thought of me as soon as a cancellation came in. Big thank you for this!

I booked the Pizza Bar on the 38th because my partner is a big pizza lover and dreamt of going as soon as he found the restaurant online. We kept asking ourself, how good can a pizza get and will they also be worth their price?
We found the pizzas incredibly good: the dough was perfect, but nothing we've never had before. What stood out most were the toppings. The mix of specific Japanese & Italian ingredients is what created those new flavours that matched really well. Everything was cooked perfectly, nothing was soggy or overcooked. The creativity of the pizzas were what made the experience so special. The concept is an omakase, meaning each guest gets one slice of each pie. I guess if you're into pizzas it's definitely a place to try, for us it was worth it.

The only negative points were what we were still hungry as you get around one small pizza per person, and you can't order an extra that of course you'd pay for. Second and last negative point was that Chef Daniele wasn't present - we (all the 8 guests) had to request a couple of times that Chef Daniele comes for at least a short time to talk and take a souvenir picture. He eventually came and it was nice to chat with him.

All in all a great experience, amazing pizzas, cool vibe, and most important a happy boyfriend! Would recommend."
