What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Hatsune is a historic Japanese sweets shop offering traditional desserts like anmitsu and shaved ice in a cozy, old-Japan atmosphere. While many praise the delicate flavors and authentic ingredients, some find the prices steep and note the lack of an English menu. Cash payment is also a common point of notice.
"Traditional sweets shop that serves anmitsu!
Be warned they do not have an English menu and google translate did not work well with its vertically written cursive Japanese. However, the elderly lady working was most happy to describe and translate for us."

"This long-established shop prides itself on its history, perhaps a little too much. It offers a wide range of traditional Japanese sweets such as kuzumochi, anmitsu and zenzai, as well as parfaits and soba. Prices are mostly over ¥1,000, which is understandable given the location, but still feels steep. Service is minimal and only cash is accepted. The modern yet quiet atmosphere adds to the experience. The tea, brewed in an iron kettle, is rich and aromatic. Signature items such as mamekan and shiratama anmitsu offer a choice of black or white syrup, highlighting the quality ingredients with delicate textures and subtle sweetness."

"Nice place to sit down for a dessert after a meal, or, in lieu of a coffee. The interior is traditional and cozy. The various dessert on offer are nice.
The shop apparently has been around for over 150 years."

Hatsune has been serving tanmen from its cramped back-alley quarters on the ground floor of an old Japanese house for more than half a century. Seating might be limited – there are just six spaces at the counter – but the menu options are varied, including ramen, wontonmen and yakibuta-men. The most popular dish, however, is the tanmen (¥700), a bowl of shio (salt-based) ramen topped with cabbage, bean sprouts and carrots.
