Reviews Summary

Gonpachi Nishi-Azabu offers a truly unique dining experience, largely due to its iconic atmosphere inspired by the movie 'Kill Bill'. While many rave about the vibrant ambiance, excellent service, and diverse menu featuring traditional Japanese izakaya fare, some reviews suggest the food, while decent, may not always live up to the visual spectacle. It's a place where the experience and setting often steal the show.

"5-Star Review for Gonpachi Nishiazabu – A Must-Visit Tokyo Icon

Dining at Gonpachi Nishiazabu was an unforgettable experience that more than lives up to its legendary reputation. Known globally as the inspiration for the famous fight scene in Kill Bill, this restaurant is so much more than a movie backdrop — it’s a place where fantastic food, incredible atmosphere, and top-notch service come together perfectly.

From the moment we walked in, we were struck by the warm, lively vibe. The architecture and decor transport you to another era, with its wooden beams, lanterns, and open kitchen creating an authentic, energetic setting.

We ordered a variety of dishes, and every single one was a hit. The grilled eel was tender and flavorful, the mackerel had just the right balance of smoky and savory, and the shrimp tempura was light, crisp, and perfectly fried. The fried chicken was juicy on the inside with an irresistible crunchy coating. The veggie sushi was fresh and beautifully presented, and the freshly made soba noodles had an incredible texture and taste that you can only get when it’s handmade on-site.

To top it off, we enjoyed cocktails and beer that paired wonderfully with the food. The drinks menu is just as thoughtfully crafted as the food, with something for everyone.

The service was friendly, efficient, and attentive without ever feeling rushed — impressive given how busy this spot can get.

If you’re visiting Tokyo, Gonpachi Nishiazabu is more than just a place to eat — it’s an experience. Amazing food, iconic setting, and a vibe that makes you want to stay all night."

"Known to the westerners as the “Kill Bill” restaurant, this was so much more. We made a reservation for 5PM and were welcomed by the entire staff upon entering. The drinks were great and the shareable plates were absolutely wonderful. A fun environment with food and service and price that was above expectations. Highly recommend!"

Scott Bruck

"It’s more a Japanese culture experience than fine dining. But well worth going to. Ayaka was our awesome waitress. Very helpful and friendly. I loved the food but I can see why some would expect a little more. I think the ambience and the setting is awesome and feels like a Japanese movie set. Sitting at the bar was awesome too. Recommend you visit at least once."

It is most famous for its unique appearance; taking inspiration from a scene in Kill Bill(2003), it looks as if it’s out of the Edo period.

Tokyo Shopping: Must-See Places for Fashion, Sneakers & Food

A restaurant perhaps better known to many for its interior design than its food, Gonpachi's Nishi-Azabu location featured heavily in Quentin Tarantino’s 2003 film Kill Bill. Don’t get things twisted, though; they offer a range of traditional Japanese dishes for a reasonable price, as well as a few higher-priced meals. Of course, it’s always crowded in there, and some have commented you’re paying more for the atmosphere than the food, but if you're a big film buff that's in need of some nourishment after your Tokyo shopping spree then you know where to go.

For our first suggestion, though this depends on the hour you personally find appropriate, we recommend the Gonpachi Nishi-Azabu Restaurant, which directly inspired Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill: Volume 1. Located in the district Roppongi, the restaurant resembles the scenario of one of the best scenes in the movie, as The Bride fights off the Crazy 88 in her quest for vengeance. Thanks to the restaurant’s unique layout, it’s easy to understand why Tarantino found Gonpachi Nishi-Azabu so captivating.

The Best Izakayas in Tokyo

After guiding you to a secret spot like AO Corner or Koenji, it’s time for some obvious and very touristy call outs. Gonpachi Nishiazabu is the famous Izakaya everybody knows from the infamous Kill Bill fight scene, but is surprisingly a good Izakaya by itself. When we were first invited to that place for a business meeting, I was super scared to end up in a theme park-like restaurant with lousy food and music.
