Reviews Summary

Ahiru Store is celebrated for its extensive natural wine selection and cozy, intimate atmosphere, often highlighted by the friendly sibling owners. While many praise the food, particularly the bread and some small plates like octopus with avocado, a few diners found certain dishes disappointing or the portions small for the price. The consistent wait is a significant factor, with queues forming before opening.

"Love this place and a part of me wants to keep this location secret (bit too late anyways). We came at 4.30 pm and were lucky to get the last available table right away. We ordered few dishes (thanks Google translate) and all was excellent. Not to mention the succulent natural wines too."

Stephanie Wong

"Great wine and food. It's a small place so you might feel cramped. We went there around 17:00 but had to wait for about an hour. Staff are very nice and friendly. Food was pricy despite the small portion size. Overall, I think this place is a little overrated."

Rio

"We were in the line at 7:20. The owner told us they can handle us. We ended up waiting until near closing time and we were only able to order appetizers. The owner did not even interact with us nor offer any apology. Do NOT go here at least 2 hours within closing time. The owner should’ve known better how his store works."

Ahiru Store | Bars and pubs in Shibuya, Tokyo

Everybody's favourite secret wine bar in Shibuya, Ahiru Store's reputation has far outstripped the size of its premises. Located at the far end of Tomigaya (it's actually closer to Yoyogi-koen Station than Shibuya), this corner bar is run by a sibling tag-team: he takes care of the wine list, she bakes the bread and oversees the food. Both are consistently interesting: sommelier Teruhiko Saito sticks to natural wines, predominantly French and many from little-known producers, with a rotating selection available by the glass.

21 Best Bars in Tokyo, from Hotel Lounges to a Tequila Speakeasy

Situated on a leafy corner 10 minutes away from Shibuya station, Ahiru Store is a mecca of hard-to-find natural wines (mostly from France). The rustic décor reflects the bar’s priorities. Empty bottles and the autographs of cult producers like Pacalet and Domaine de L’Aglore adorn the walls and windows, and daily offerings are listed on a heavy black chalkboard.

Tokyo's Best Wine Bars | Dining

Rustic, casual and tiny, this place packs a punch with its alluring menu of hard-to-find natural wines and plates of pâté, steamy soups and crisp, freshly baked breads that are delivered to tables of Japanese hipsters with cult-like knowledge and appreciation of unwittingly cool natural winemakers. The combination of the peculiar menu and the laidback but charming hospitality means that the eight seats get filled rather quickly, with queues forming from late afternoon, well before the 6pm opening. Though if you can get a spot, the simple setting and soundtrack of clinking wine glasses over the hum of guests’ unhurried conversations and musings about the wines are certain to make all the pains of waiting in line disappear into nothing.

At Tokyo’s Best Bars

With daily queues of fervent customers eagerly awaiting Ahiru Store’s 6pm opening, Tomigaya’s cosy natural wine bar is one of Tokyo’s worst-kept secrets. A favourite amongst locals and a hit with visitors, Ahiru Store is a small but perfectly formed Shibuya bolthole run by sibling duo Teruhiko and Wakako Saito. Sommelier Teruhiko serves a rotating selection of hard-to-find natural wines (predominantly French), whilst sister Wakako takes care of the food – rustic fare including chunky salads, soups, pates and home-baked bread.
