What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Tonkatsu Ganko Nara is a highly acclaimed spot for its exceptional tonkatsu, described as the best in the world by some. Diners rave about the crispy yet tender pork, the fun of grinding their own sesame sauce, and the generous portions. The restaurant also offers a welcoming atmosphere with a serene garden courtyard and friendly staff. While most reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few mention occasional tough cuts of pork or average curry.
"First time trying this restaurant, although I was here a few times.
Ordered the black pork loin cutlet and the mixed fried prawn and oyster.
The pork is very nice and well fried, still the tenderness and some fats within the meat.
The prawn and oyster are also quite nice, but I still prefer the pork loin .
The sesame seeds mixed with the source go well with the meat."

"Hidden gem at the train station! 🚂🍴 This spot serves incredibly delicious food with a warm atmosphere. The staff are super accommodating and welcoming. We ordered the chicken set and asked if they could do the scrambled egg which they were happy to do. Be prepared for a queue, but don't worry, it's fast-moving! ⏱️ Worth the wait for sure. Highly recommend for a quick bite on the go! 👌"

"The best tonkatsu in the entire world. Grinding the sesame seeds for your sauce is a lot of fun. I can't stress how incredible the food is here. You must try the thick cut katsu. The fried shrimp are so soft and creamy. It doesn't feel like shrimp. I almost don't want to write such a good review because I don't want to have to deal with a line when I go back, but honestly this is the best pork katsu in the world. I went for my first time in 2009. I never forgot this place. I thought about it every time I return to Japan. The lovely staff. The pleasant garden in the middle of the restaurant. I even bought one of the special grinding bowls on my trip to Japan last year because I always wanted one after eating here. Now I finally had a chance to back in September of 2025 to eat here again. It was even better than I remembered."

At this West Ave restaurant, Korean-born chef Donald Chang marries the cuisine of his homeland with the Japanese grill and sushi dishes he’s been preparing professionally for years. Nara’s almost 7,000-square-foot interior includes a 96-seat main dining room with a central sushi/bun bar, a ten-person chef’s table directly in front of the exhibition kitchen, a private 16-seat room designed for an authentic Korean grilling experience, and an outdoor patio lounge with a seating capacity of 60. The chic and stylish space allows for intimate booths or community tables, but we like to sit at the central bar where you can interact with the sushi chefs and watch the grill masters slap hunks of Texas Wagyu beef on the grill to sizzle.

I had plenty of tonkatsu while in Japan, and this one in Nara is one of my favorite ones. So much so that I kept bringing people to it every time I visited Nara with someone new.
