Reviews Summary

Tenjaku is celebrated for its exquisite Kyoto-style kaiseki, with a particular highlight on its perfectly executed seasonal tempura. Diners rave about the intimate and warm atmosphere, where the chef's passion for his craft is evident in every dish. While the slow pace and longer dining duration are noted, they contribute to an unforgettable and attentive experience. Some may desire slightly heartier options towards the end of the meal, but overall, it's considered a must-visit for fine dining enthusiasts.

"Every dish was cooked to perfection and presented masterfully. The chef has great knowledge in sake and tea as well, and his selections complemented the meal nicely. It’ll be a long dinner (~3hrs), but it will be delightful. Can’t wait to go back next time we visit Kyoto."

Chloe Park

"Best meal (and possibly the best experience) of our 10 days in Japan. The chef spoke decent enough English to explain each dish, but the warmth and care were apparent in any language. Very delicious food—we particularly loved the tofu tempura (very similar to tofu agedashi) and the Chinese tea. The ambiance was as beautiful as pictured, if not more. On a rainy evening the chef even walked us out with an umbrella make sure we got our taxi."

Erick Reitz

"Wonderful meal filled with complex and delicious courses. This omakase experience was 3 hours and the chef described everything with care. Beautiful restaurant and design as well. Definitely a must try in Kyoto!"

Best Restaurants in Kyoto: Top 13 Must-Try Spots in 2024

Tenjaku isn’t just a restaurant to owner-chef Nishioka Ryo, it’s home. From the age of three, he watched his grandfather impress the people of Kyoto with delicious kaiseki and tempura dishes, inspiring him to take over the restaurant after training in the Michelin-starred kitchens of Otago and Kodaiji Wakuden. Even though you’ll never quite know what delicacies await with the omakase nature, you can be sure they’ll follow a tried-and-tested path of hassun — assorted Kyoto-style delicacies — for starters, followed by soup, sashimi, and tempura that’ll have you wondering why they didn’t get a Michelin Star sooner.
