"My personal best Sushi Omakase experience thus far! The dishes are extraordinarily delicious, but the atmosphere is what truly completes the course!"

On March 9th, I had a great time at Rakumi, a sushi restaurant in Gion, Kyoto. The atmosphere was very international, with a Texas father and son who knew the taste of sushi, a cool New Yorker, myself from Japan who was mistaken for a Chinese person and spoke to me in English by the staff, a couple who were regulars, and a lovely couple from Osaka. It was a great restaurant with better performance...

The cutest family owned sushi restaurant you will find in Kyoto. Not only is it the best in town, they also are amazingly kind and are mentioned in the Michelin guide. We payed only 13€/person for a full sushi plate and it was a 10/10. I found that place on IG but also locals recommended it to me 🫶🏼#japan #kyoto #kyotofood #kyotojapan #foodjapan #japon #kyotovisit

Reviews Summary

Sushi Rakumi is lauded for its exceptional omakase, world-class sushi, and the engaging, humorous interactions with Chef Nomura and his team. Guests appreciate the intimate setting and high-quality ingredients. However, some diners have noted issues with communication regarding pricing and perceived service lapses from certain staff members.

"Amazing omakase meal ~250 usd per person. The chefs tried to engage with us despite the language barrier. They were super kind and funny. They had more cooked courses than raw fish. There was a total of 8 seats. We were late (got the dinner time mixed up) and they still accommodated us and gave us the courses quickly so we could catch up."

Joni Choi

"Rakumi, a sushi restaurant in Gion, Kyoto, Texas Oyakosan, New Yorker and I, a couple who come to this restaurant every month on the right, and a couple who came from Osaka in the back. The food is delicious and the show is fun. The chef's skills and personality enhance the fun and taste to the utmost. Michelin single star."

子ども食堂

"Outstanding, best meal on our Japan trip, great chef and staff, lots of interaction even with limited english. Guests and staff shared a drink at the end of them meal. They were also great at accommodating my wife's gluten free requirement, bring your own soy sauce. Will definitely go back!"

15 Best Sushi Restaurants in Kyoto: Top Must-Try Places

Where Tokyo is famous for sushi, Kyoto is far more famous for traditional kappo and kaiseki multicourse dining — the Michelin Guide has listed a staggering 118 of them in Kyoto. Sushi Rakumi is the descendant of one of these restaurants, the indomitable three-starred Gion Sasaki, which is possibly the most famous kaiseki restaurant in existence. Situated on the banks of the Shirakawa River, on the northern side of the Gion district, Rakumi’s Michelin star (an award that surprised nobody, given its parentage) brings flocks of visitors to its counter, but especially so in spring, where the dramatic sight of blushing cherry blossoms and swaying willow trees line the river.

The 16 Best Sushi Restaurants to Visit While in Kyoto

Sushi Rakumi, which opened in 2019, offers Edomae (Tokyo-style) sushi, following in the footsteps of the renowned Japanese restaurant, “Gion Sasaki,” a 2003 Michelin Kyoto three-starred restaurant known to be one of the hardest restaurants to get a reservation at in Kyoto. Sushi Rakumi has received one Michelin star for four consecutive years since 2020. Top chef Kazuya Nomura began his training at Gion Sasaki and was later appointed to work at “Sushi Yoshitake” in Ginza, Tokyo, which held three Michelin stars for 12 consecutive years until 2023.
