To start your day, Curio Espresso and Vintage Design cafe serves up latte art drinks, breakfast sandwiches and a piled-high pulled-pork sandwich. Cubby Hole is a quaint cafe with breakfast wraps, matcha creations and a sleek, white interior with pops of plants.

I did really well when I visited Kanazawa as part of the first of this year’s two Japanese trips. I’d chosen my hotel largely for its proximity to the castle (which I could see from my window), little realising that it was surrounded by a clutch of excellent coffee shops, one of which, Curio Espresso and Vintage Design, was visible from the other side of the hotel. I was originally put on to Curio by Happy Cow, a site for finding vegetarian and vegan restaurants, which resulted in my heading to Curio for breakfast on my second day in Kanazawa.

Speaking of Seattle, Curio owner Yuko Otoku and her husband Sol Gayago were former residents of this well-known coffee city in America before relocating to Kanazawa in 2014, making Curio one of the first of the new wave of coffee shops here. Many overseas visitors enjoy Curio as a place where they can order in English, and Yuko and Sol are more than happy to accept customized orders for the drinks they serve. Curio is conveniently located in a renovated machiya house in Yasue-cho along the Kanazawa Omotesando street, close to Omicho Market.

Curio” is a delicious espresso coffee stand in the Yokoyasuecho shopping street, which appears on the left hand side of the main route that extends from Kanazawa Station. This café, run by a cheerful and friendly couple, specializes in delicious latte made in Seattle. They loved the atmosphere of meeting and interacting with people of different generations, so he decided to create such a “place”.

If espresso is a necessary start to your day, Curio has you covered. All coffees are espresso-based, and even the Americano is robust. The full menu is available throughout the day, so in addition to the egg and cheese Breakfast Sandwich (pictured), you can chow down on pulled-pork or perk up with the vegetarian-friendly quinoa or hummus plates.

Kanazawa native Yuko Otoku and husband Sol Gallago run this glass-fronted coffee bar featuring exposed wood beans and a mix of couch, counter, and table seating. Shelves host an array of new and old curios ranging from sewing machines to radios and cameras. A powder blue La Marzocco espresso machine provides the engine for the round coffee bar.

Since no weekend getaway is complete without a delicious brunch, I recommend that you start your day at Curio. Sol and Yuko Gallago met at a coffee shop in Seattle, and bonded over a love of perfectly roasted beans. Now they’ve set up shop in Yuko’s hometown of Kanazawa, and are concentrating on providing the best coffee in the city.

They opened Curio to bring their experience of drinking and brewing delicious coffee in Seattle to Kanazawa City locals. Curio sources beans from local micro-roasters, and uses milk and eggs from local farms.

If you’re looking for one of the cutest cafes you will ever find, this is it!!. Curio Espresso is probably one of my favorite cafes because it is just the most beautiful, vintage-inspired design. They also have lots of veggie options, with soy milk as an option in order to make any of their drinks vegan as well.

After almost two weeks in Japan, truth-be-told, Sarah was craving a sandwich. Due to all the wonderful reviews, it wasn’t hard to find Curio Espresso and Vintage Design. The small shop is run by a husband/wife couple from Seattle/Kanazawa (respectively).

In the heart of the modest and traditional city of Kanazawa, a little slice of Seattle opened in 2014. Curio Espresso and Vintage Design is like a hip indie-style coffee shop that took a wrong turn and ended up in Japan. But, we’re glad they did.

If you like a bit more darker roast coffee then this is the place for you. The owners are an American guy and a Japanese woman who are extremely friendly. The cafe can get pretty popular, so go early to make sure you can have a seat.

Their specialty, authentic espresso is brewed in the Seattle style with an espresso machine. The big machine on the counter looks cool. Their antique interiors and vintage cash register are also pretty.

First we stopped by Curio Espresso for some coffee to start the day. I tried their iced cinnamon latte here and it was very nice. I prefer it over the typical pumpkin spiced latte.
