Hiroshima Nagataya restaurant. Very long que at around 5pm after our walking tour (video to come). Good food good vibes and was actually pretty decent on price. Finding halal food in Japan is proving very difficult but this place is very accommodating and there’s plenty of veggie options to choose from. If you ever around in Hiroshima is worth a visit. I can’t link the location for some reason so ...

Reviews Summary

Nagataya is highly praised for its authentic Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, with many finding the wait worthwhile for the delicious and generously portioned savory pancakes. Diners appreciate the unique experience of watching chefs cook and the availability of vegetarian and vegan options. While generally loved, some reviews mention long queues as a potential drawback, though most agree the culinary reward justifies the wait.

"Incredible restaurant. Lots of good vegan and veggie options and had a lovely atmosphere- you can watch them make the food on the grill whilst you eat. We had never tried okonomiyaki before but will definitely be trying it again after this! Very well priced and definitely worth the 35 minute wait."

Ananya Ganjam

"The queue was there already at around 5 but the okonomiyaki was well worth it. The portion is fine for an average guy, but might be too much for a single lady.

The food was really good, smoky, well cooked and the blended together very well, very savoury. Good for before/after your travels around the peace memorial park"

C J

"Super yummy! It was so fun to try a new type of cuisine. We got to sit near the grill and watch them make it.

It was about a 20 minute wait but totally worth it.

Everyone loved it. Really close to the atomic bomb dome."

Located right next to Peace Park at the end of Hondori, this okonomiyaki restaurant’s great location usually has a long line waiting outside. For those who can brave the queues, or turn up outside of rush-hour mealtimes, this is a great option for larger groups. Despite its popularity, Nagata-ya boasts a more spacious layout than the typical okonomiyaki shop, with good seating and heated grills installed in the tables to keep the food warm.

One of those restaurants in Nagata-ya, which can be found a stone’s throw away from Peace Memorial Park, but I hit up the second place to start selling vegan okonomiyaki, Jirokichi. This restaurant is situated right off of Namiki Street; to reach it, head south from Parco, turn right onto the street right before Peace Boulevard, and keep walking until you see a spiraling staircase across from a 7-Eleven. Jirokichi is on the second floor and sports a yellow neon sign, but unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be an elevator.

Hiroshima's Healing Highlights

I’m waiting in a short line outside Nagataya, a traditional restaurant reknown for the some of Japan’s best Okonomiyaki, the classic and delicious Japanese savoury pancake. It’s mid-winter and a stiff breeze is blowing through the small network of grid-like alleys that occupy the eastern bank of the Motoyasu River. We are eager to get inside to escape the cold, and sit back as the chef places the enormous, multi-layered pancakes on the embedded hotplate in our table.

While this dish is usually not suitable for vegans due to the use of eggs in the batter, Nagata-ya has a special “vegetables only” section on its menu offering three different types of vegan okonomiyaki (for vegetarians, the choice goes up to nine). If you tell the server that you’re vegan, they’ll also make sure to only give you vegan-friendly sauces.

If you’re heard of okonomiyaki, a specialty food of Osaka, then you may know that Hiroshima has its own version as well. It’s a dish that’s as closely associated with Hiroshima as it is with Osaka. There are differences between Osaka and Hiroshima okonomiyakis but at its core, it’s a Japanese savory-sweet pancake made with wheat flour batter mixed with eggs, grated yam, shredded cabbage, and any number of supplemental ingredients.
