What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Kōhōseki is celebrated for its incredibly affordable prices and generous portion sizes, offering a satisfying taste of Japanese-Chinese cuisine. While the flavors are consistently described as tasty and reminiscent of old-school preparations, some diners noted a lack of variety and occasional issues with dish execution or service details like napkins. Despite potential minor drawbacks, the value and hearty meals make it a recommended stop.
"I've eaten here twice in 3 years and it's always a very filling and cheap dining experience! This time I ordered 麻婆とんこつチャハン and ハーフ唐揚げ! The portions were very large, enough for two people! The fried rice with slightly spicy Mapo とんかつ was flavourful and was even better with 生中! The fried chicken was well seasoned, juicy and freshly cooked! I will come back again for a wholesome, friendly experience!"

"There was a 10-15 min queue while we visited last week on a weekday afternoon. There were ample indoor waiting seats so that was not an issue.
The restaurant was actually quite big as there are more seats on the 2nd floor. Warm towels were served once we were seated. As overseas Chinese, we were glad to be able to taste Japanese-Chinese cuisine. I was quite disappointed as I came wanting to try the DongPoRou (Braised Pork Belly, like Chinese style Kakuni-Rafute in an uncut slab) but it was sold out for the day. We then order the usual stir fries.
The Mixed Vegetable Stir Fry was pretty good. It came with a variety of cabbages, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, onions, carrots and slices of pork. It was well seasoned and quite savoury with a hint of sourness which could be some fermented bean sauce or plum vinegar.
Next up was the Fried Bee Hoon which came with a generous heaping of vegetables and pork. The Bee Hoon isn't what I'm used to in my home country as theirs is bouncier and came blended with some mung bean and corn starch, with a texture similar to glass noodles. It was peppery and delicious. However, the pork slices had a strong porky flavour, which could only be masked by chili oil and vinegar. It was still tasty though.
The gyoza were thin-skinned, crispy and quite juicy on the inside with ample minced meat paste. The tempura prawns were great value for money. It costed 1000 JPY for a massive plate of 9-10 fried juicy prawns. I don't think I'll be able to get such value in my home country. The batter didn't had much seasoning and the staleness of the frying oil came off as a little strong.
Beer was ice cold and very satisfying. The drink bar was 無料 and free flow during lunch hours, at least, that was what I believed. We didn't go too crazy and took only what was needed."

"No complaints. Solid food; very large portions; great value. The two teenagers I was traveling with loved the wonton soup; one claimed that it was their favorite meal of the trip, which leaves me questioning her sanity based upon the quality of some of our previous meals, but to each their own. Warning, the restaurant was super busy and we did have to wait 30 minutes for a seat."
