Reviews Summary
Miyajima Anago Meshi Mametanuki is praised for its delicious signature conger eel rice and fresh oysters, making it a worthwhile stop on Miyajima Island. While some patrons find the food excellent and the service attentive, others have described it as a tourist trap with disappointing food quality. It's noted as a good option for late-night dining when other establishments may be closed, though be prepared for potential wait times.
"I had the conger eel rice set with fried oysters, the conger eel taste was pretty subtle, the sauce provided was sweet but not overpowering. The oysters were big and delicious, and the breading was crunchy when biting into it. The side dishes provided were pretty good, the natto beans were pretty good in taste, and the salad that came with the oysters had nice-tasting dressing. My mom had the udon with beef, the soup of the udon was also delicious, and the udon were very chewy. The staff were courteous and nice, although the atmosphere was pretty dark. Possibly due to the weather outside. Would come again to experience the taste of eating anago(conger eel)."

"One of few places that were open later during the offseason in miyajima. We were able to enjoy several great oyster dishes paying homage to the local seafood. Drinks were on point and the attentive service made this dining experience very enjoyable."

"After a very unsatisfactory meal at Kakiya, I had to cross over to opposite side to Mametanuki for some revenge eating.
Luckily, the anago, kaki set did not disappoint me. Anago is highly recommended. I like the soup packed with clams too. Good option also to escape the crowd a bit."

2025 Recommended Restaurant in Hatsukaichi (Updated Sep)
Miyajima in Aki, home to Hiroshima's World Heritage site Itsukushima Shrine The specialties of Miyajima are oysters and conger eel rice A popular restaurant where you can enjoy these specialties is "Miyajima Anagomeshi Mametanuki" in Miyajima's Omotesando shopping arcade Look for the charming raccoon sign It is located on the first floor of Kinsuikan, where weddings and other events are held As it is a popular restaurant and generally does not accept reservations, it is recommended that you line up early for lunch and get on the waiting list The most popular dish is the combination set of conger eel and fried oysters, but this time we simply ordered conger eel rice (with small side dishes, pickles, seasonings, etc.) I tried the dish (2500 yen, with miso soup) This conger eel is luxuriously made with two eels, seasoned with a special sauce It has a fluffy, melting texture and is sweet and rich, It goes well with rice cooked with Koshihikari rice from Hiroshima Prefecture The inside of the restaurant is like a maze, and although it seems quite narrow, it is surprisingly spacious deep inside During lunch, there are 10 counter seats and 96 table seats open The restaurant also serves dinner, and you can enjoy local Hiroshima sake and a la carte dishes #0 yen trip January 2025 #Hiroshima Prefecture #Conger eel rice #Local gourmet #Miyajima gourmet
Hiroshima Cuisine: 12 Must-Try Foods and Local Products
Anago-meshi, another one of Hiroshima’s most famous dishes, is similar to unagi-don. However, anago, Japanese conger eel, is much smaller than unagi and has meat with a lighter, less fatty taste. Anago is unlikely to melt in your mouth the way unagi does, but its delicate, plump meat is packed with a mildly sweet flavor that has become popular throughout Japan.
Hiroshima Food Guide - 7 Things You Must Try in 2024
Anago Meshi is a delightful dish from the Hiroshima region, featuring grilled conger eel served over rice. It originates from the nearby Miyajima Island, and it’s popular as Miyajima food you can’t miss. Conger eel, or “anago” in Japanese, is different from the more common unagi (freshwater eel).
