What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Hatsuhana Soba Honten is praised for its authentic, handmade soba noodles and generous portions, especially the impressive shrimp tempura. Diners enjoy the cozy atmosphere and river views. While the food is generally well-received, some find the curry soba less impressive than other offerings. Expect a wait during busy periods, but many find it worthwhile for the quality and experience.
"Blissfully slurping of soba noodles in Hakone! An experience that makes you feel like you’re a retired 80 year old Japanese person thats worked the whole life and have nothing to worry about. Just have to get through the waiting as there’s usually a line. Note you have to write your name down and # of people and they’ll call you out. If you’re non-Japanese, you could be cheeky and put a Japanese sounding character/name and they’ll call it out!
We had the Teiyo Soba and Oyakodon Soba and it was absolutely delicious. Servings were big so unfortunately couldnt order more than 2 dishes or itd be a waste. Actually thought of going back but there was legit so many places to eat and things to see in Hakone that we decided that the one trip to this soba place was the only time we can afford.
Definitely a visit back if its still there when we return."

"We were in Hakone for the hot springs, and this spot was really close to our hotel, so we decided to check it out for breakfast. It’s a small, cozy place right by the river, which gives it a nice vibe. The food was decent—not surprisingly good, but the portions were pretty big. Overall, it’s not a bad place to stop by if you’re in the area and looking for a simple, quiet breakfast."

"Busy little two-story soba spot packed with fellow travelers.
The soba was solid, nothing fancy, and the tempura was crisp and satisfying.
Service was quick, and the view outside? Peaceful enough to slow down the tourist buzz for a moment.
A great stop if you’re hungry and on the Hakone trail. 🍜🍤⛰️"

Besides the delicate and healthy tofu cuisine, Hakone’s delicious natural spring water is also used to make soba, or thin noodles made from buckwheat flour. Soba is served in so many restaurants in the onsen town, so much so that it replaces rice to become the main course for your meals in Hakone. This tasty noodle cuisine can be served cold or hot, accompanied by delicious sides such as tofu, tempura or vegetables.
Hakone Food & Dining
For some solid local fare, you should make a stop at the quaint Hatsuhana Soba Honten and have a set of soba. The shop is very small, only seating around tweleve customers but has a great old world atmosphere. The price is moderate, around $15-20 USD for a 'set', and less if you order invididually.
The Little Known Foodie Heaven of Hakone - The Ōracle
At Hatsuhana Restaurant I ordered “Tororo Soba” which is soba noodles in hot broth with raw egg yolk and grated raw mountain yam. The yam is a specialty in this area and we were bang on in the middle of the season.

Established in 1934, Hatsuhana Soba Honten is a long-established soba restaurant with nearly 90 years of history. I was particularly impressed by their handmade soba using domestic buckwheat flour and Japanese yam.
