What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Hotou Fudo is celebrated for its signature Hoto noodles, a hearty and warming dish served in generous portions, often praised for its comforting taste and traditional atmosphere. While many appreciate the unique noodle experience and large servings, some reviews mention the broth can be plain, and a few diners have encountered rude staff. It's a popular spot, especially for tourists seeking local cuisine near Kawaguchiko Station, but be prepared for potential waits and a cash-only policy.
"Food is served piping hot as they are cooked upon orders. Vegetarian version tastes great but broth could be sticky and might not be accepted by some. But overall, good tasting and delicious meals."

"My colleagues and I decided to visit this restaurant because it’s conveniently located near the Kawaguchiko Bus Terminal.
I ordered the Fudou Houtou. A hot noodle dish served in a large bowl. It features flat udon noodles and a variety of vegetables in a miso-based soup.
To be honest, the taste was quite simple, something you could easily recreate at home. However, as a tourist, I still think it’s worth trying for the experience. The atmosphere is what really makes it special. It feels like stepping into old Japan, as if you’re wandering through a historic town and stumble upon this traditional eatery. Imagine Kenshin Himura (of Samurai X) or Tanjiro from Demon Slayer dining here, that’s the kind of nostalgic vibe it gives off.
I recommend going around 11 AM so you can avoid the lines and get your order in quickly.
I also noticed that many other tourists stopped by to eat here, so it seems to be a popular spot."

"Probably the only time I had to pay by cash on this trip to Japan (no electronic payment accepted). Hotou Fudo is a local thick noodle dish boasting a milder, simpler flavour compared to typical ramens and udon dishes. I liked it for the amount of vegetables it had, but it ultimately didn't leave too deep of an impression, and the pricing was above average. Come earlier before the tourist crowds swarm in if you want to give it a try."

Assuming you get into town around noon, I recommend spending your first hour in town at Hotou Fudo - a restaurant known throughout Japan as one of the best noodles in town. "Hoto" noodles are a very thick buckwheat noodle in a miso based soup - think of them almost like the exterior of a steamed dumpling - and it's very filling. Although there's usually a line, it seemed to go fairly quickly and we would 100% recommend waiting, even though it takes up an hour or two of your day trip.
