If you approach Venice by train make your first stop on arrival and last before departure this lovely century-old cake and coffee shop on the main lista di Spagna pedestrian route, two minutes from Santa Lucia station. True to Venetian form, there's nowhere to sit down, but you'll still come out refreshed and ready to go after a good coffee, tea, or hot chocolate, plus a little sweet indulgence. Next door they recently opened a 'Cioccolateria' selling treats like handmade chocolates, marrons glacés and a range of liqueurs.

In the tourist-tack chaos of Lista di Spagna, five minutes’ walk from Santa Lucia train station, Dal Mas is an island of true venezianità, known citywide for its excellent homemade cakes and breakfast pastries. Though there's a decent range of sandwiches, panini, and pizzettas, you come here for the cakes, made by the Balestra family from recipes handed down through generations. The almond slices are sublime.

Filled brioche, exquisite chocolates and pastries, such as kranz (a braided pastry filled with almond paste and raisins) and strudel from the Friuli region, and bar service make Dal Mas a great choice for breakfast. It's been a local favorite since 1906.

Some people are really into sweets and, although Venice is not particularly famous for its desserts, there are some quintessential (not necessarily traditional, but still delicious!) experiences one must have and these are: the salty pistachio and dark chocolate ice-cream at Da Suso in Sotoportico della Bissa; the croissants with pistachio at Pasticceria Pitteri; a slice of any cake at Vizi e Virtù (my favourite, the Tenerina, a super soft chocolate cake originally from Ferrara); and the pastries both at Pasticceria Dal Mas (do try their tiramisù!), close to the train station, and Pasticceria Rizzardini, in Campiello dei Meloni in San Polo. If you want to bring home something sweet from Venice, a good idea is to buy a tinned can of Baicoli (super dry biscuit typically used to dip mascarpone and mustard) or Buranei biscuits (the s-shaped buttery biscuits from the island of Burano).

Pasticceria dal Mas oh so many choices but I’m going to suggest this one. It’s been going since 1906 and it was good enough I went back more than once. They serve a very good espresso, too.

If a cafe is standing room only, that’s how you know it’s good. Trust me with this one. This is another traditional bakery and café with a long standing reputation in Venice.

For the best “Fugassa” in the city you have to go to Nono Colussi while for an artisan workshop that churns out products with genuine flavors there is Pasticceria Dal Mas.

On your right are a few souvenir shops (beware “Murano glass” which is made in China!) and you’ll then see Dal Mas, one of the best pasticcerie in Venice.
