The homemade desserts are all luscious (it's been said that La Bitta serves the best panna cotta in town), and you can trust the owner's selections from her excellent wine and grappa lists, which tend to favor small local producers.

Head for this trattoria which swims against the Venetian tide in offering only meat and vegetable dishes in the regional tradition. These might include potato gnocchi with pumpkin and smoked ricotta (a good vegetarian option), or pork fillet roasted with plums. They have an excellent cheese board, and in winter and early spring do great things with a vegetable that reaches its apotheosis in this part of the world, radicchio di Treviso.

Only opened in the evenings and closed on Sundays, this place will also be on my hit list for next time. Venice also has a great number of art galleries and churches across the city which offer you a different experience found in the more tourist areas like San Marco.

Another is La Bitta, a nice walk across the Academia Bridge from San Marco. Distinctive in that the menu is mostly meat v the fish served in most Venetian restaurants. Crowded usually so reserve (only by phone).
