For coffee, I didn’t get a chance to hunt down specialty coffee but I always enjoy a stop at Florian which is Italy’s oldest continuously operating cafe. It’s quite special during Carnival time, too. You can’t beat a 3.5eu coffee at the bar inside!

If you’re visiting Venice, I’d highly recommend to stop by, relax a bit and enjoy the good coffee near Piazza San Marco. It’s a 300 year old authentic caffè where you can get some nice cake, and ice cream besides a huge selection of coffee.

However, our favorite place to eat during our 3 day, 2 night stay in Venice was at Caffè Florian. Caffè Florian is the oldest cafe in Italy, dating back to 1720!. We went in the middle of June and did not have to make reservations.

One of my favorite old cafés I have ever visited is no doubt the Café Florian. This famous café on Saint Mark’s Square has been seen in many films and old pictures. Also famous for its pricing, as well as its beautiful interiors.

The price to sit outside and sip an espresso is not cheap (at least €15), but if you stay awhile, this is money well spent. A cheaper option is Gran Caffè Chioggia, which doesn't charge extra for music and has good jazz nightly.

I would recommend Cafe Florian as your first stop for coffee in Venice. Not only is it the oldest cafe in the city, but second oldest in the world. This is the first cafe that opened in Venice and it is still operational.

When Monty and I were last in Venice we took tea at the Florian. OK, I can already hear you asking why on earth would we stop for tea at the Florian in Venice?. We know it is outrageously priced.

One example is Caffè Florian in St Mark’s Square which is preparing to celebrate its 300th birthday and is famous for opulent interiors, waiters in white jackets and exorbitant prices.

Dining here is truly an experience in itself with its ornate interiors and live orchestra playing in St. Mark’s Square. Prices are steep but it’s the worth the splurge at least once.

The December 29, 1720 was opened the famous Caffè Florian, still active in Piazza San Marco, under the Procuratie Nuove, and in 1775 opened another famous coffee, the Caffè Quadri.

In 1720, Caffè Florian first started serving up fine java in an equally luxurious atmosphere; and the tradition of beautiful settings and quality drinks continues to this day!

We enjoyed afternoons at St. Marco’s plaza people watching, and listening to the orchestra at Caffe Florian, Venice’s oldest cafe and quite possibly one of the most luxurious.

The square is also lined with shops and cafes – including the iconic Caffè Florian. But like all touristy areas, most of the places around this piazza are overpriced.

We stopped at Caffè Florian mid-morning after a visit to St. Mark’s Cathedral. This cafe-bar dates back to 1720 and is one of the oldest bars in Italy.
