Scannabue is in the happening district of San Salvario, where modish restaurants and bars line the streets. It is in a former car showroom and is themed to look like a 19th-century Turinese cafe, though it is perhaps more reminiscent of a Parisian bistro, with its chocolate brown and olive green furnishings, wooden floorboards, and the odd curio dotted about. The menù degustazione (€30) includes a selection of creatively presented starters such as rabbit, beef tartar and cod and mash, along with homemade agnolotti del plin (pasta squares) stuffed with rabbit, beef and pork.

Piedmont is a leader when it comes to notable Italian red wines, its most famous being Barolo – an elegant oak-aged number made entirely from Nebbiolo grapes, which are native to the region. As well as in the glass, try the legendary red on the plate with this slow-braised beef dish, simmered in Barolo to create an intense red wine gravy and butter-soft meat. Recently enlarged with a new room created from the adjacent premises, Scannabue is now a 'new classic' in the city, operating since 2008 and becoming a solid reference point over the years. A modern, easy-going osteria, it honours tradition but with a personal touch, from vitello tonnato to agnolotti (with three roasts, on the traditional menu at 35 euro) of course, with a few excursions into the sea. In the larder, dishes are available to take away or to eat on site.

Probably the best known classic restaurant in Turin, for over 15 years Scannabue has been drawing diners to a square towards the south of the city for its delicately prepared classics. Featured on the Michelin guide, the menu leans meat heavy (Scannabue means literally “slit the cows throat” in local dialect). It is also, fittingly given the city’s heritage, situated in a former car showroom, and is worth a visit for the chic green accented room alone.

Maybe they changed the menu and dropped your favorite dish, or the same pasta dish as last week didn't quite work out so well this time around. Scannabue, however, is not that restaurant. If you want to impress your travel companion without worrying about wild cards, this hospitality-minded eatery is the place to come.

For dinner, head just a few steps down the street to Scannabue, a popular restaurant for Piemontese cooking. While the restaurant opened in 2008, the atmosphere is old school. Scannabue – In its 12 years, this local trattoria has progressively become one of the most appreciated restaurants in the city and has been inserted in the Bib Gourmand’s Michelin guide. The decoration is traditional, vintage and cozy and this spot is ideal for both lunch and dinner.

Another favourite from my 2nd trip was Scannabue, which again has a more modern, lighter menu but exceptionally good. Often rated as one of the best restaurants in Turin, it’s certainly one of my favourites (click here for review).

Located in the heart of San Salvario, Scannabue is a crowd pleaser. The style is inspired by French bistrots with small tables and fast and efficient service, making it perfect both for a fast lunch or a dinner in tête-à-tête.

On a Saturday lunch, it was packed with locals catching up with friends. It’s also Michelin-starred and reasonably priced. I loved the agnolotti del Plin, a ravioli-like pasta stuffed with meat and served in a brothy sauce.

One of the most popular eateries in Turin is Scannabue, deemed Bib Gourmand on the Michelin guide for its high-quality ingredients and good value. Come for lunch, order anything and you’ll surely get your money’s worth.
