Reviews Summary

Caffè Tommaseo offers a visually stunning experience with its historic ambiance and elegant decor, complemented by attentive service from staff like Loris and Dino Jo. While many rave about the exquisite seafood and personalized dishes, some diners have noted issues with service inconsistencies, particularly during busy periods, and occasional concerns about the restroom facilities. Despite minor drawbacks, the restaurant is celebrated for its memorable dining moments and rich historical charm.

"The restaurant is great, everything is on the high level. Design is quite posh. We are vegetarian and there were only one vegetarian dish for us (pumpkin gnocchi), but our waitress Loris and Goffrane offered us special dishes out of menu and they were very tasty! Especially ravioli with cacio e pepe, you need to include them to your menu! We enjoyed the taste and how the dishes looked a lot.
There are some things can be improved: please add more vegetarian dishes to your menu. It is also make sense to clean/renovate a toilet.
Overall we had a great experience in this restaurant, thanks for this service."

Polina List

"We had the absolute pleasure of dining at this incredible restaurant during our honeymoon visiting Trieste for the very first time from Ireland and it quickly became one of the standout experiences of our trip.

From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by maître Loris, whose passion, knowledge, and exceptional recommendations made our evening unforgettable. Loris’s guidance through the menu and wine list was beyond impressive , each dish and pairing elevated our experience to something truly special.

We were served by the fantastic Dino- Jo, who were equally attentive, friendly, and professional throughout. The service was flawless warm, genuine, and perfectly paced.

The food? Simply the best we’ve had in years. So much so, we came back again during our short stay something we very rarely do on holiday. Every plate was bursting with flavour, beautifully presented, and clearly made with care and expertise.

This is more than just a restaurant it’s an experience, made memorable by people who clearly love what they do. Thank you Loris, Dino Jo for making our honeymoon in Trieste even more magical. We’ll be talking about this place for years to come and recommending it to everyone! You must visit when in Trieste. Loris you made our honeymoon dinner so special thank you so much, we can’t wait to plan our next trip in Trieste."

Shirley Bracken

"We had the privilege of dining at this most famous restaurant located in Trieste late last year whilst on vacation from Australia.
The location, building and interior took you back in time however with a modern outlook as the service and food were exceptional and delicious. The waitresses and waiters were more than happy to give you a history of the restaurant and the menu, wines and food that are predominantly and proudly sourced locally.
We had a superb time and we recommend it to anyone visiting this beautiful port city of Trieste in North East Italy."

Where to eat, sleep and have fun in Trieste | Italy holidays

Trieste is famed for its grand literary cafes, mythical meeting places for the intelligentsia and political subversives, but today, most have been modernised and wouldn't look out of place in Barcelona or Amsterdam. Guidebooks will tell you that the great exception is the San Marco – a favourite of James Joyce when he lived here – but if you only have time for one coffee drop in at the Tommaseo, a much livelier locale, and perfectly positioned between the waterfront and Piazza Unità. 5 Riva III Novembre, caffetommaseo.com

A tour of Trieste’s historical cafés

When it first opened it was called Caffè Tomaso and the owner was Tomaso Marcato that came to Trieste from Padova for business and trade reasons; it opened up onto the square that was once called piazza dei Negozianti (now piazza Tommaseo), and quickly became the favourite place of artists and business men that had the chance to meet in an elegant and refined environment. The decorations that embellish this historical café, that changed its name to Tommaseo in 1848 in honour of the patriot and writer from Dalmatia, are a creation of the painter Gatteri, while the wonderful mirrors were imported from Belgium. And the last surprise is that the owner was the first to introduce ice-cream to Trieste!

Hot chocolate, the 7 best spots in Trieste

It's located just a stone's throw away from Piazza Unità d'Italia and was the city's first café, established in 1830, becoming a haven for artists and intellectuals of the time. The old and luxurious atmosphere is characterized by stuccoes, mirrors, and spaces in imperial style. It's worth stopping by even just for a coffee; it's excellent and is served with an inevitable small glass of dark hot chocolate in winter or with cream in summer, along with a long list of drinks listed “alla Triestina.” The artisanal hot chocolate is truly delicious, and one can also savour it on the terrace overlooking the sea.

10 places to drink coffee in Trieste

A must in the itinerary is the Caffè Tommaseo, another historic café where you can sit down with a ‘Goccia tazza calda’, a ‘Capodeca poca schiuma’, or perhaps a ‘nero in B’ while taking in the irredentist atmosphere along with the ancient noise of the parquet – unfortunately, the only furnishing not devastated by a sad, rough renovation. This, the oldest café in Trieste (1830), was a central point in the Trieste resurgence. The Viennese café tradition has been resumed with drinks and foods reflecting the rhythms of the day – breakfast, lunch, tea-time and dinner.

Trieste for wine lovers | Jancis Robinson

Not far from the square, in the much smaller Piazza Tommaseo, Caffè Tommaseo is by far the best café to have wine in. Like Vienna, Trieste is above all the town of cafés, fancy bars dating back to the beginning of the twentieth century, impregnated with Belle Epoque atmosphere, vaguely resembling a Downton Abbey set. Most are victims of the Prosecco fever that is spoiling the world’s wine offer, and may not be the first place to look for fine wines, but something good can still be found here and there.

5 historical cafés to discover in Trieste

Founded by Tommaso Marcato, from Padua, was renamed after the Dalmatian patriot Tommaseo, after the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy in 1918. From Stendhal to Saba and Svevo, the café was and still is one of the liveliest cultural meeting point for many national and international intellectuals. Today it has the recognition of being one of Italy’s historical places and it widened the range of its products: it added the Bischoff wine-house’s trademark, one of Trieste’s historical places.

Caffe Tommaseo - Opened in 1830, Caffe Tommaseo is the oldest cafe in the city- frequented by the likes of Italo Svevo, Umberto Saba, and Claudio Magris (who allegedly wrote his Danube right there). It’s a grand, Viennese-style cafe, but the atmosphere is casual- you can sit for coffee, breakfast (like I did for my birthday once- eggs and pancakes and fruit), or lunch.

Historical cafes: Tommaseo, degli Specchi

The oldest café in Trieste is Caffè Tommaseo, at the end of via San Niccolò, in piazza Tommaseo 4/c, facing the Rive. Founded in 1825, it owes its name to the irredentism movement who dedicated it to Niccolò Tommaseo, the Dalmatian author of the first Italian dictionary. In fact, it preserves some relics of linguistics and the then Italian patriots.
