Reviews Summary

Caffè degli Specchi is praised for its historic ambiance and prime location on Piazza Unità d'Italia, offering beautiful views and a nostalgic atmosphere. Diners enjoy the wide selection of coffees and sweet treats, though some note that service can be slow and prices are above average. Be mindful of pigeons if dining outdoors.

"This place is amazing!
It brings you back in past,
in some better times,
with it's interior mostly,
than with classic music etc.
Stuff is very polite and helpful,
and range of coffee and sweets is
extremely wide and tasty.
Highly recommendation for this place
on Triestes central square."

Kabil Muharem

"One of the oldest, if not the oldest cafe in Trieste. It is located on the largest square and has a wonderful view. The service is a bit slower, but that is common in Italy when you come to popular places. The food is the worst - the pasta with tomatoes and gambori is bad, the pasta is store-bought and as if it should have been cooked a little more to be al dente, and the gambori are frozen and you can really feel it in the taste. Prices above the average for Trieste. It's worth coming and having a drink, but not much more than that. Be prepared that if you sit outside, pigeons (mostly) and seagulls will land on chairs and tables and try to take your food, which can be very irritating and unhygienic."

Sveto Rakovic

"Such a nice place to sit and relax, and enjoy the great view of the square in front, in a restaurant with an elegant, historic feel. I had a lovely breakfast fruit plate and coffee. The atmosphere was calm and the staff didn't fuss or make me feel rushed.

There are doves/seagulls around, but that's just what you get in a city and near the sea. They were not aggressive, but easily went away when you waved in their general direction."

Christina Nessa

Of the coffeehouses, Caffè Degli Specchi is the best-known, spreading magisterially across Piazza Unità, where customers wait to be ushered past its red rope. Its owners, the Faggiotto family, have two more worth seeing – Caffè **Tommaseo near the seafront, which hosts regular concerts, and Pasticceria La Bomboniera, past the Canal Grande, which showcases a heart-stopping selection of cakes, pastries and chocolates. And if you think the rich interior of Antico Caffè Torinese resembles an early ocean liner, that’s because that was the designer’s day job.

Trieste, Italy, Was Named One of the Best Places to Travel in 2025

Trieste is known as the coffee capital of Italy, and that’s saying a lot considering how much Italians love their java. Caffè degli Specchi, located right on Piazza Unita d’Italia, offers the quintessential coffee-drinking experience in Trieste, with tufted chairs and antique fixtures, plus espresso and other coffee drinks, pastries, and brunch fare served with much pomp and circumstance.

For a great view of the great piazza, you can't do better than this café, whose many mirrors make for engaging people-watching. Originally opened in 1839, it was taken over by the British Navy after World War II, and Triestini were not allowed in unless accompanied by someone British. Because of its location, the café—which stays open late—is heavily frequented by tourists.

Its elegant boulevards and squares are punctuated with grand theatres like Teatro Verdi and fin-de-siècle cafes, such as Caffè San Marco, now celebrating its 105th year, and Caffè degli Specchi, a hall of mirrors with front row seats on the city’s monumental centrepiece, Piazza Unità d’Italia.

Caffè San Marco is the most historic, Caffè degli Specchi is the most ornate, but my favourite is Caffè Torinese (www.anticocaffetorinese.it), a quaint, antiquated hideaway where you can linger over a decadent cream cake, sink an espresso at the bar, or buy coffee beans to take away.

The historic cafes of Trieste

Founded in 1839, it is the only remaining of the four cafés in Piazza Unità d’Italia, once called Piazza Grande. Since then, it has been a protagonist in all the most important chapters in the history of Trieste, frequented by irredentists at the end of the 19th century and became the headquarters of the Royal Navy after World War II. It owes its name to the fact that, since its opening, it was customary to engrave the most important events on mirrors or sheets of glass. When the sun kisses the wonderful square, the people of Trieste do not fail to reserve a table in the front row and enjoy their “parlor” with a good capo in B and a praline.

Shopping in Trieste

Facing the Mediterranean Sea, it’s the location of the city’s public offices, among which the Assicurazioni Generali palazzo, an elegant hotel and one of the oldest cafés in the city, called Caffè degli Specchi, but a citizen of Trieste, however, would never choose it as a destination for breakfasts, rather preferring an elegant cake shop like the Pirona, located in front of a palazzo that was once home to James Joyce, or a coffee shop. The delicious coffee shop La Triestina in Via Cavana 2 is the ideal location from which to start shopping, just after a “capo b” (a macchiato served in a glass) and a creamy Krapfen.

5 historical cafés to visit in Trieste

Located in Unità D’Italia square in the heart of Trieste, you will find the Caffè degli Specchi. Its opening dates back to 1839, when the founder out of cunning decided to decorate the walls of the room with mirrors, carving the most important events of the time, so as to make the cafes appear brighter and save on oil lamps. The café was considered from the earliest times the salon of Trieste, where intellectuals such as James Joyce and Italo Svevo meeting for concerts that were organized by the beginner Franz Lehar.

Why Trieste is the ideal destination for all coffee drinkers

We end our tour at the Caffè degli Specchi, in the heart of Trieste's grandiose Piazza Unità d'Italia. We sit at one of the tables that spill out onto the square, and I learn that Trieste even has its own coffee terminology: if you order a cappuccino you are served a caffè macchiato (an espresso with milk); you need to ask for a caffè latte (coffee with milk) instead. I sip my velvety coffee, marveling at how intricately linked the city's history is with coffee, the world's second most valuable commodity after oil.

A meeting place for members of the irredentism movement and the headquarters of the British Navy until 1954, its name comes from the ritual of inscribing important historical events on the mirrors and windows.

The obvious spot for people watching was Caffe degli Specchi on the main square, where tourists thronged to enjoy the last rays of sun before sunset while sipping Aperol spritz. The best, however was Caffe San Marco, whose fantastic art-nouveau interior was only matched by the relaxed atmosphere. When I first came in, it was full of people listening to a talk about the future of progressive left, which immediately conjured images of early-20th century intelligentsia who patronised it.
