Reviews Summary

Buffet Birreria da Rudy is celebrated for its authentic Triestine and Bavarian cuisine, with diners praising the generous portions and delicious traditional dishes like Jota and goulash. The cozy, old-world atmosphere and friendly service are often highlighted. While some find the seating a bit cramped and occasionally slow service, the overall value and quality of food make it a highly recommended spot for a hearty and affordable meal.

"Great place with amazing food. The “Jota” soup is amazing as well as the goulash and any of the meat dishes they have. The apple strudle was also remarkable. I went there everyday I was in Trieste. I recommend doing a reservation in advance as it gets busy."

"I can see why those that didn't get a chance to dine here would be so upset to leave a bad review because local dishes I had here were incredible and my server was very friendly and respectful. I spoke my best Italian and utilized Google translate and that goes a long way especially as a foreigner visiting.

I came on a Saturday during lunch right before they closed and had no issues getting a table for 1. I started with the Tartina di Liptauer which had such great flavor and on a freshly toasted piece of bread. I enjoyed the local specialty Jota as a first course and the second course I highly recommend their Goulash. I ended with the Apple Strudel which was a little cold in the center but still delicious. These portions are very generous and filling. I'm glad I came on an empty stomach and even the server was impressed and gave his compliments.

If you can call ahead for a reservation do it and try to make an effort speaking really basic Italian when you're there. I went with no expectations as I didn't have a reservation and was willing to take a chance and grateful that I had the opportunity to dine here after doing so!

For a full course hearty meal at under 40€ I couldn't recommend this place enough!"

"Recommended by our hotel. Incredible Bavarian vibe. We can really suggest you try the sliced ham, the Kaiserfleisch, and the goulash. The portions are enormous, though - one serving would have easily satisfied both of us. Usually packed, so I would really try to make a reservation. Our dinner service was a bit slow - not the fault of the only waiter, I think that they were understaffed that night. Definitely a hidden gem. Do not confuse it with a similarly named bar one street over. The WC is a complete antique - be prepared to squat! Absolutely recommended."

Friuli, Italy, guide: what to see plus the best bars, hotels and restaurants | Italy holidays

A guilty pleasure not to be missed is a plate of succulent pork (porcina) smothered with grated horseradish in a traditional spit-and-sawdust buffet bar such as Buffet Da Rudy (mains from €7, Via Valdirivo 32, 039 040 639428). Health-conscious foodies are saved by the newly opened 040 Social Food (salads €5, Via Rossini 8, 39 040 7600869, on Facebook), which offers big organic salads or grilled octopus, topped with creamy jerusalem artichoke. Grado has some great, but often expensive, fish restaurants, but an affordable option is a fritto misto of baby squid, anchovies, sardines and red mullet at the waterside Osteria Zero Miglia (mains from €14, Riva Dandolo 22, 39 0431 80287, zeromiglia.it).

Best Restaurants In Trieste - Guide

Buffet Birreria da Rudy is a lesser-known alternative to the famous Buffet da Pepi, yet both serve delicious traditional Triestino cuisine. While Buffet da Pepi tends to be bustling due to its popularity, Buffet Birreria da Rudy is equally excellent. Be sure to indulge in their generous meat plates as an entrée—these portions are large enough to share among the entire table.

21 Best Restaurants in Trieste (from an Expat)

This is the far less popular alternative to the famous Buffet da Pepi. Both serve traditional Triestino fare, which is very meat and potatoes heavy. While this isn't my favorite cuisine in general, I do think it's worth the try for something totally unique within Italy.
