Inside this historic bar and on its extraordinary terrace you can enjoy natural relaxation and have always tasted the by now very famous Almond Wine “Il Blandanino”, created by Don Vincenzo Blandano, the first and historic restaurateur of the small village, produced with fine grapes, natural essences and Sicilian almonds. From 1907 to today, visitors from all over the world have tasted the almond wine and left their dedications on the book that collects illustrious signatures, thus continuing the story that has always made this bar famous and unique. At the entrance of the Café, visitors can still find a book, a collection of signatures, in which to seal their visit and tell their emotions on their passage in this natural viewpoint of Taormina whose view is blessed with history, colors and peace and beauty, and whose soul is inebriated by a panorama that dominates the Ionian coast.

I’m ashamed to admit, but although I have been looking to the town since the beginning of this century, I learned about the existence of the bar only in 2015, when my favorite Italian musicians – Il Volo – showed on their Instagram how they eat granita here, praising it as the best in Sicily. In turn, I considered granita in Syracuse as the best in Sicily, so I was puzzled to pick up the “granite” glove, that was given to me by boys and I was looking forward to the day until I returned to Taormina to confront their opinion with mine. I reserved more time, spent more than two hours at the table and tasted a total of four flavors: orange, strawberry, raspberry, and almond.

Sicilians abroad grow misty-eyed at the mention of granita, but what is a snack for us is in fact their breakfast, and served with a generously sized brioche bun. Bam Bar is the local's favourite hangout, where grown men sit under the awning, surveying the piazza, while tucking into the town's best granita – coffee-flavoured, with whipped cream and a fluffy brioche (although it would be churlish not to try the other 15 fruity flavours on offer). The next morning, after I’d grabbed an almond milk granita – a semi-frozen dessert that originated in Sicily – from Bam Bar, and sampled the calorie-laden cannoli at Laboratorio Pasticceria Roberto – arguably the best in town, I took a walk through the town. Taormina’s main thoroughfare was once part of the ancient Roman road, the Via Valeria, and it still showcases the town’s rich history with its mix of Arab, Norman, Baroque and Gothic architecture.

Bam Bar is famous and touristy but it doesn’t matter because the interior design is very cool and the granitas and brioche are some of the best you’ll find in Sicily.
