Like dinner last night, it was like sitting in a cave- I guess with the hills of Siena these caves are quite common to make room for living. While the service was quite slow and disorganized when we were there, the food was very tasty. We ordered a tuscan sampler of meats and cheese as well as the quail special as appetizers.

It is not far from the top of the escalators taking you from Fonte Branda to the Duomo and the battistero. I had the pici, it is a sienese handolled pasta like a spaghetti on steroids.

A bit of a funny story… we had tried to book Antica Osteria da Divo but they didn’t have availability on the night we needed. On our first night in Siena we headed to the restaurant we had booked only to find it completely closed!. They were closed for three nights but hadn’t bothered to let us know.

It’s hard to know what cuisine would best suit this almost-eerie setting of brick vaulting, exposed timbers, walls of bare rock, and even some Etruscan tombs—either some sort of medieval gruel or else something innovatively refined, which luckily is the direction this menu goes.

After a quick dip in the hotel pool, we headed to Antica Osteria da Divo for dinner. The restaurant is in the basement of a building right near the Duomo. As you descend the steps, you turn and suddenly find yourself in these vaulted Etruscan tombs from the time before Christ.

The good news is that Siena has some fantastic restaurants and in fact, my most enjoyable meal in Tuscany took place in the cavernous setting of Antica Osteria da Divo, a fantastic Sienese restaurant that is located deep in Etruscan caves that run under the city’s streets.

We were seated in the lower part of the restaurant this time ’round, down steep stairs into a cavernous room. Apparently it dates back to the times of the Etruscans – around 600BC – how cool is that?. Our meal, as always, was delicious.

Antica Osteria da Divo is also one of the city’s best-known restaurants. Cozy and perfect for any kind of occasion, this venue allows you to enjoy every night the new creations of chef Pino, who is always ready to impress his guests.

This wonderful restaurant is situated in a 13th-century building with underground Etruscan caves. Seems like an elegant place, huh?. But, they don’t require you to be a history fanatic for you to enjoy their delicious delicacies.

I recommend Osteria da Divo, via Franciosa (nearby to the Duomo). This restaurant lies in a series of carved-out medieval vaults under the Duomo. This unique dining experience and hidden gem will be a highlight of your day!
