Welcoming and rustic, this eatery is set inside adjoining trulli, complete with dark-wood beams, whitewashed walls, and a patio for summer dining. It may be one of Alberobello’s more tourist-oriented joints, but Ristorante L’Aratro nevertheless remains one of the city’s most raved about dining destinations. When you have strolled around this characteristic town, head to L’Aratro Ristorante (which is located in one of the trulli!), where chef Domenico Laera cooks up traditional Apulian dishes and regional specialities and serves the best Apulian Wine. Another great option is Villa Jamele, located in Orsara di Puglia, which is run by famous chef Peppe Zullo. Peppe is a champion of the Slow Food movement and makes use of delicious local herbs and vegetables in his cooking.

Our first stop was for lunch at L’Aratro where Domenico Laera, the owner personally took care us. He is a very colorful and charming character; we enjoyed his jocular exchanges in Italian with Carlo Romano, our resourceful guide and driver during our stay in Puglia. The food was fantastic (I think I had my favorite pasta dish in Puglia here) and the setting in a multiple trulli building made it a perfect place for lunch.

What can I say, well-deserved stars, we had a great time from the beginning to the end of our meal. Although there was a wait for the table, the welcome was immediately impeccable, offering us the possibility of staying in the cool and while waiting, they welcomed us attentively, asking us if we wanted anything. A well-kept and intimate place, so I recommend if you are two or more to book your table.

Ristorante L’Aratro really stands out with its traditional trullo roof setting. They’re big on local cuisine, and it shows in their menu – Orecchiette with cime di rape, Cavatellucci with fagioli e cozze and Semifreddo alle Mandorle are among their most popular dishes. The place has a real cozy feel to it.
