What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Zia Restaurant is highly praised for its beautifully presented, innovative dishes and exceptional wine list, offering a refined tasting menu experience. While many find the food phenomenal and the service warm and attentive, a few diners have noted that some dishes can lean towards bitterness and the portions, typical of fine dining, might be smaller than expected. The intimate and stylish ambiance is generally appreciated, though some found the underground seating less romantic.
"Extremely good 1* restaurant, & a very good value. They acommodated my pescetarian wife perfectly and let us do two different menus that we shared, which is always a huge bonus, getting to try twice as much. Very casual vibe, great music playing (Burial, Four Tet, etc). 6 dishes added to my list of best things I've ever had: the pork belly, the oyster (!!), the sweetbreads, the mackerel, the spiny lobster (!!), the flan for two.
$170/person, 24/20 score, priced great ($70 cheaper than EL Ideas, another 1* in Chicago, which was similarly good)."

"I had to say the experience was not pleasant and satisfying.
Regarding the food, the chef is kind of fan of bitterness, the only dish I enjoyed was the fish. The tasting menu includes 2 cold desserts and one of them is styled with coffee mainly, which i think not so considerate for a dinner in winner.
As for the atmosphere, we had the dinner in the underground with little illumination, I’d call it a good vibe for drinks after dinner, but for dinner? I won’t consider it as romantic and cozy.
The service is the least to be mentioned negatively, the serving staff accomplished their responsibilities dutifully but to be honest they’re the most serious people I met in Rome haha"

"The food, service, and cleanliness at this Michelin-starred restaurant were all excellent. The place was spotless, and the staff was attentive and friendly. However, while the food was enjoyable and well-prepared, it didn’t blow me away or offer that extraordinary, mind-blowing experience I expect from a Michelin star. It was good, but not special enough to warrant such high praise.
Another disappointment was the waitress’s uniform, which looked more like a pajama than anything fitting for a Michelin-star restaurant. I was expecting a more polished, professional look.
Additionally, while the restaurant was clean, the design felt very flat and lacked the wow factor.
Overall, while the experience was pleasant, I wouldn’t give this restaurant a Michelin star. For the price of 200 euros per person, I expected much more. I would consider this meal worth 80 euros per person at best."

The 24 Best Restaurants In Rome - Rome
There are plenty of trattorias around Rome, but when nothing but a fancy tasting menu will do, Zia in Trastevere is your best bet. It’s one of the rare fine dining places where you’ll want to go for fewer courses, since the portions are so rich and satisfying. One standout is the tender filet of peppery steak on top of a smooth hazelnut purée and drizzled with sesame vinaigrette, served with crusty bread and warm incredible butter.
Cacio e pepe in Rome: eating Italy's trendiest dish
Genovese’s modernising influence is spreading, with former Il Pagliaccio chef Antonio Ziantoni opening his own restaurant Zia (ziarestaurant.com) in the bohemian Trastevere neighbourhood late last year.
Where to Get the Best Sweets in Rome
Address: Via Goffredo Mameli 45Unlike the other selections on this list, Zia is not a bakery or a cookie shop or a chocolate factory, but rather a restaurant, and a spectacular one at that. The dishes at Zia are creative, beautiful, and delicious -- in that way where a telltale hush falls over the table as all parties take their first bite -- and the desserts are no exception. Zia's incredibly talented pastry chef Christian Marasca is responsible for desserts like the the Nocciola (hazelnut) which consists of hazelnut mousse, vanilla caramel, and praline and hazelnut cookie, all encased in a milk chocolate shell finished off with edible gold dust; the Tourbillon (whirlpool) or a buttery, swirly, intensely vanilla-y tart; house made chocolates; or Risolatte with cherries and black garlic, a fancier take on the typical rice pudding, complete with a crackly brulee shell to dig in to.

Zia: Named after chef Antonio Ziantoni, whose first restaurant this is (following a superb learning curve with Anthony Genovese at the Michelin-starred Il Paliaccio), Zia is an intimate space. With 30 covers and an interior design that fuses clean, sleek Scandi lines with delicate hints of Roma, Zia is one of those restaaurants in one of those areas of the city (Trastevere) that can too easily be overlooked by the tastemaker cognoscenti. Search it out, though – you won’t be disappointed with a seasonal menu hat smacks of true culinary refinement.
These are the 10 best restaurants in Rome, ranked by local expert
For four years Antonio Ziantoni worked with Anthony Genovese of Rome's two-Michelin starred Il Pagliaccio and even with England's Gordon Ramsey. For his own venture, he chose Trastevere - a neighborhood in need of dining evolution, and the dividends have paid with the venue now boasting 1 Michelin star in its first years of operation. The interiors and fit-out at Zia are an ode to those all too familiar Scandinavian lines infiltrating the city but with Made in Italy design touches, Ziantoni and co. have truly made it their own.
