Trattoria Monti is not only a great restaurant in the vicinity of Termini Station: it is one of the best restaurants in the entire city. A family-owned restaurant run by two brothers, it specializes in cuisine from Italy’s Le Marche region, so you’ll have the chance to sample creative menu items that go beyond typically pasta and pizza dishes. Try the giant ravioli with oozing egg yoke or zucchini flan with squash sauce.

Tucked into a quiet corner on the edge of Esquilino, Trattoria Monti is a traditional restaurant that serves rich dishes influenced by the Le Marche region. The intimate restaurant only has about twelve tables, so you are guaranteed personal service – most likely by one of the two brothers who own the trattoria. Some recipes, like the cheesy layered eggplant parmigiana, are almost so decadent that they are better shared (in other words – perfect for a date night between two food lovers).

If you are a foodie and want to eat at a particular restaurant, especially a well-known spot like Roscioli, Trattoria Monti, or Armando al Pantheon, then it’s best to make a reservation 1-3 weeks in advance (unless it’s a holiday such as Easter, Christmas etc., then it’s recommended to make a reservation at least a few months prior). If you don’t care particularly what restaurant you go to, then you can wing it when you get to town if you prefer.

Of course, there are exceptions like 3 Michelin starred La Pergola or super-central Trattoria Monti, Armando al Pantheon and Roscioli. But Osteria Bonelli’s addition to that list shouldn’t be surprising. The food is simple, satisfying and unbelievably cheap by Roman standards; pastas cost €8, most mains are €7, vegetable side dishes cost €3 and the house wine is a steal.

Trattoria Sora Margherita – eating at this family run hidden gem in the Jewish Ghetto is a cultural experience to remember; there is no sign, so look for the red curtain in this tucked away, tiny piazza; you have to join a “club” to dine, but it’s simple and worthwhile. My grandmother talked about our 2-hour lunch here for years!. Reservations required.

Decor, menu, wine list and bill, everything exudes more prestige, and that makes the Trattoria Monti an interesting change. The menu is small, which is necessary if you have little ready-made, but offers tasty finds. What about the tagliolini (flat spaghetti) with fresh anchovies, cave-aged sheep's cheese and sultana raisins?

Run by the amiable and charming Camerucci brothers, Enrico and Daniele, with their mom Sandra in the kitchen, Trattoria Monti consistently stays in my top 5 places to eat in Rome. One thing I love about it is the relaxing ambiance, and friendly service that allows you to choose the pace of your meal.

Trattoria Monti – Just behind Roma Termini in the Esquilino neighborhood, this trattoria serves Marchigiano cuisine in a tastefully no-frills space. Only in Rome can you find tortello al rosso d’uovo–one giant, sumptuous raviolo–within a five minute walk of a major train station.

We were with suitcases and the staff suggested that we put them in their room so that the suitcases would not interfere with anyone. There are not very many tables, and the opening hours are limited, but the place is popular. I advise you to book a table in advance.

The third and final contender for the best pasta restaurant in Rome is Trattoria Monti. This small, cozy little joint, with mum in the kitchen and sons running the floor, gets everything right. There's a warmth to the place, and the food is phenomenal.

This hip, vibrant restaurant with friendly owners and staff is a bit out of my way but I come when I can because it's so worth it. If you're in a pasta mood, you can't go wrong with any dish at Trattoria Monti. I love these tagliatelle al ragù.
