Reviews Summary

La Matriciana dal 1870 is celebrated for its authentic Roman cuisine and historic ambiance, with many praising the classic pasta dishes, particularly the bucatini all'amatriciana, and the exquisite homemade tiramisu. However, some diners have reported issues with dishes being served cold and a lack of attentiveness from the staff, which can detract from the overall experience, especially for special occasions.

"Our first meal in Rome and one of the best!! The carbonara was one of the best I’ve ever had. It was creamy and so fresh! We got the mozzarella and tomato appetizer and that was also incredibly fresh. The basil was delicious and so flavorful. I highly recommend"

"When I’m in Italy and especially Roma, I want classic Italian food and a decent house red. Too many restaurants have lost their souls and sorry, Michelin restaurants don’t qualify.

La Matricina serves both meat and fish and I have to say the grilled sea bass was among the best I had. We started with a mixed salad and their homemade chickpea soup, amazing. The pasta selection is what you want and we tried two favorites including melt in your mouth lasagna.

House wine is delicious as is the service. Entire bill for two was less than 140 EU. Surely one of the best restaurants in Roma.

Be sure to make a reservation, busy all night. Outdoor seating available, very limited."

"We chose this restaurant for the first dinner of our honeymoon, but unfortunately, it didn’t live up to expectations. We started with the tomatoes and mozzarella and the prosciutto for appetizers. The bread and crackers they served were stale. The olives were decent. The tomatoes and mozzarella were just okay—very plain with nothing added for flavor. The prosciutto was good but not the best we’ve had; it didn’t compare to other places we’ve visited.

For pasta, we ordered the rigatoni carbonara and the bucatini alla matriciana. Unfortunately, both pastas were cold. My husband just ate his, but my carbonara needed sauce- it was curdled and cold from the egg and cheese. The table next to us overheard us talking about it, and they mentioned the same thing had happened to them. I called the waiter over, and he took my dish back, but when it was returned, it was still cold. At that point, I didn’t want to complain again.

We also ordered the osso bucco and the beef carpaccio. The carpaccio was alright, but lacked flavor, and the osso bucco was also cold. It honestly felt like they pre-made the dishes and just reheated them because the plates were hot, but the food was cold—doesn’t make sense.

For dessert, I was excited to try their berry dessert, and the waiter mentioned they had only one left. Honestly, that was the best thing we ate all evening, but it wasn’t enough to redeem the meal.

The staff was unattentive and it was hard to get anyone's attention throughout the meal. It was a disappointing experience, especially for a special occasion like our honeymoon."

41 Best Restaurants in Rome, According to a Local Expert

The laminated menus here are substantial, starting with a decent list of antipasti (grilled scallops with rocket leaves and tomatoes; fried eggs with black truffle). All the Roman classics feature, including the house namesake, bucatini pasta Amatriciana with pork cheek, tomato, and pecorino cheese. We opted for the less-Roman-but-very-Italian spaghetti with market-fresh vongole (clams), prepared the way it has always been, with plenty of garlic, parsley, and olive oil.

It encapsulates both the historic elegance of 1870 (when it opened) and the slick, suit-and-tie vibe of the ’60s. The waiters are as sharply dressed as the white-clothed tables, and the food is just as classic. The prosciutto and mozzarella here are unmatched—ham sliced fresh from the bone and extra-creamy cheese delivered daily from Campania.

Some places try to recreate a vintage look, but at this historic restaurant right across from the opera house, the décor hasn’t changed since the 1930s. As the restaurant’s name indicates, this place is even older. It all started in 1870 when a woman from the small town of Amatrice moved to Rome and started cooking bucatini all’amatriciana.

Founded in 1870, it later expanded and has kept its 1930s style, with marble mosaic floors, art deco chandeliers, white tablecloths, and plates bearing the restaurant’s name.
