What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Osteria Ballarò offers a charming dining experience in a historic setting, praised for its creative Sicilian dishes and extensive wine list. While many enjoy the attentive service and delightful atmosphere, some find the prices slightly high for the region, and a few dishes could be more flavorful. Overall, it's a recommended spot for a memorable meal in Palermo.
"We had a very pleasant dinner. There are 2 place, one where you sit at the high bar tables and one at the dining table. We preferred bar chairs. First we drink negroni and then our meals. Although the entrecote was not on the menu, the chef made it special for us. I also ate swordfish. There is also a pasta with sardines, which is legendary. They were all delicious."

"We had dinner at Osteria Ballarò yesterday. We’ve been having great foods in Sicily and compared to other places we’ve been to, Ballaro seems rather overpriced although the food wasn’t better. Two of us shared a seafood antipasti, melanzane, sardine pasta and a lamb dish. The pasta was somewhat watery, melanzane sauce too creamy. The staff was friendly, courteous but they seemed a bit chaotic in the end. Including one appetitive and two antipasti, one primo and one second the bill was 100 euros."

"I hold on the 5 stars because food was great but could have more taste (still very nice). The sardine pasta lacked a but of flavour. The red gambas were on point, simple dish of very high quality.
However it’s a very nice place to have a very nice dinner and would back to try many more dishes, it’s easy to enjoy your time here, very nice service and a really good wine availability."

Palermo’s 11 Best Restaurants And Osterie For Local Flavour
Built in what were once 17th-century stables, Osteria Ballarò is a highlight of its eponymous district, named for the market that dominates its streets. Touches like exposed brick and trickles of sunlight lend Ballarò a modern airiness that you’ll find refreshing after Palermo’s more motley corners. The menu, however, is far from minimalist: the timballo di anelletti (a Sicilian oven-baked pasta made with aubergine) and minty polpettine di polpo (octopus balls) are among its triumphs.

The Best Restaurants In Palermo
Housed in the former stables of 17th century medieval palace, Palazzo Cattolica, Osteria Ballarò oozes charm: a thatched roof, original columns, exposed brick – and yes, wine barrels, (and wine bottles) galore. The space is divided into a casual wine bar where you can head for an aperitivo and plated street food, and a more formal restaurant where the walls are filled with rotating artwork from local artists and a menu filled with local delicacies – expect lots of fish plus plenty of vegetarian options (the servings are larger than you’d expect, so pace yourself). The pasta with sardines, saffron and wild fennel is a nod to Sicily’s Arab and Mediterranean roots.

You will find produce at all of the markets in Palermo, but Ballarò is not only Palermo’s oldest market, it is the city’s primary food market, selling bundles of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, meats, and cheeses. The fishmongers will have everything from huge chunks of meaty swordfish or ‘pesce spada’ to perfectly shaped clams or ‘vongole’ and delicate looking ‘polpi’ or octopus.
