Manca and his wife, Luana, run two family restaurants — longstanding Trattoria del Moro and the more casual Gastronomia Aronne, which also has a deli counter. Both eateries are informal and, Manca says, try to impart in guests the feeling that they're dining in the home of friends. "Even if visitors don't speak the same language, we hope that the relaxed atmosphere, the home cooking, and the sense of place make them feel welcomed.

This long-established haunt, a few steps from the Moro tower in the city centre, uses local ingredients and traditional regional recipes that match its old-school decor. On polished wooden chairs and at tables draped in red cloth, work your way through local delicacies including boar ragu pasta, fava bean and fennel scafata, and pasta nests with pecorino cheese and warm honey. Make sure you ask for added truffles.

In the heart of historic Orvieto, a town perched precariously atop a rocky outcrop, hidden down an unassuming side street, you’ll find a restaurant steeped in tradition. For over a century, this little trattoria has been welcoming diners with open arms and an atmosphere of jovial familiarity. Hearty Umbrian dishes are served, the wine flows freely and the chatter and camaraderie is palpable.

On the internet, I found the restaurant Trattoria del Moro Aronne. They advised to taste the “tartare al tartufo” – steak tartare with truffle and “i nidi di rondine pecorino e miele caldo” – literally swallow nests with melted sheep cheese and honey. The pasta looks like swallow nests indeed, but it is thick pappardelle-like pasta with sheep cheese and honey inside… delicious.

He drew a map to Trattoria del Moro-Aronne, near where the farmers market is held in Piazza del Popolo. He’s known the owner since he was 4, and it is a favorite among locals. After a slightly circuitous route, we found the small restaurant filled with what appeared to be mostly people from the neighborhood, including Alberto, who said he eats there quite often.

Trattoria del Moro-Aronne is a family-owned restaurant which serves excellent food. In the summer, try the polpette di melanzane (eggplant patties) and in the winter order the polpette di verdure made with mixed greens. The nidi di rondine with pecorino and honey is a cheese-lovers delight and they make a fantastic porcini mushroom and truffle pasta dish.

I’ve enjoyed every restaurant I’ve tried in the city but if I have to pick a favorite, it would be Trattoria del Moro Aronne and its sister deli-restaurant Gastronomia Aronne. The two eateries are conveniently located right next to each other. While the trattoria is better for dinner, the gastronomia is a more casual deli perfect for an al fresco lunch.

Other recommendations from Piero and Ramona for great local food included Mama Angela, Trattoria del Moro, Vinosus (with its terrace looking over the Duomo), and Al Conte. They also recommended visitors try dishes special to the area including crostini, umbrichelli (similar to pasta carbonara), pork sausages, and coniglio a porchetta (aka, rabbit).

Trattoria del Moro-Aronne: This fabulous restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and is located at Via S. Leonardo, 7. There are many things we liked about this restaurant, but for me, the best part of the experience was the service. We arrived a little later for lunch without a reservation and we were told the wait would be about 20 minutes.

Trattoria del Moro Aronne: tucked away down a quiet side street was this little gem. Unfortunately, they were closed for lunch the day I was there, but they were doing a photo shoot of a cute table and had 2 dishes prepared and it looked and smelled delicious. The menu is authentic, rustic Umbrian cuisine of mostly homemade pasta dishes.

A great spot is Trattoria del Moro, beneath the clock tower. Family owned since 1965, sisters Rolanda and Emiliana Livi, and Rolanda’s son Cristian Manca, run the place and they tell me dishes like Umbrichelli al Tartufo (pasta with truffles) and Cinghiale alla Cacciatora (wild boar in tomato sauce) are the local favorites.

Trattoria Del Moro Aronne (located at Via San Leonardo 7) is always filled with locals and savvy foodies. On weekends and during the high season, be sure to make a reservation ahead of time because Cristian and his mother Emiliana serve food and wine that are a cut above. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

The other place I’ve eaten there, the first time I went, was at the Trattoria del Moro, about one block back the way you came on the Corso at via San Leonardo, 7. It was nice and cool inside, and hilariously boasts free wifi. We had two antipasto, two large, delicious pastas, water and wine for 28 euro total.

Located on the famous square of Piazza del Popolo – once the hotbed of Medieval Orvieto’s civic government (and now the setting for the town’s biweekly, open-air market) – Chef Valentina Santanicchio proudly sources her produce, literally, at her doorstep.

Like many restaurants in Orvieto, this is a family run establishment. My favorite here is the nidi, a lasagna noodle filled with pecorino cheese and honey. Almost like dessert, sweet and delicious!

It's only an hour long and we found it to be very interesting & informative. I also suggest climbing to the top of the Torre del Moro (tower).
