Reviews Summary

Pizzeria Concettina ai Tre Santi is highly praised for its divine Neapolitan pizzas, featuring excellent dough and high-quality, fresh ingredients. Many enjoy the creative pizza combinations and the vibrant atmosphere of the Sanità neighborhood. However, some reviewers note that prices can be high for Naples, and occasional service hiccups like forgotten orders have occurred. The digital menu and unique presentation also stand out to diners.

"The dough and the cheese are excellent, my pizza was with no sauce so I can't comment on it, the tomatoes were fresh and sweet.

The server was fast efficient and kind, all I could ask for.

Overall 10/10, will fly to Italy again to taste the pizza in the near future"

arielyomtov

"Amazing pizza, prices are of course high for naples but for Michelin star restaurants it is cheap. They forgot one of our order. Atmosphere is amazing, reserve for terrace for sure!"

Melisa Şerifaki

"We were here for lunch….the food is good with different presentation from others.
We tried the tasting menu: few appetizers, 3 different pizza slides and 1 dessert. Since it was tasting menu and since they have more than one dessert I was disappointed to get only one, so when I paid I gave my feedback and promptly they offered to us Torta Caprese(very good). I do not give 5 stars because there are few things that I did not like: the music was not appropriate for a typical Napoletano Restaurant since it was more for a launch bar.
Personally, I find the use of latex gloves by waiters when serving food to be unhygienic. It often makes me think that they might not wash their hands as frequently, since the gloves can give a misleading sense of hygiene. Moreover, I was concerned by the lack of a tablecloth or even paper napkins on the marble table, and by the fact that the cutlery rested on a metal stand. It raised doubts about whether these stands are sanitized or replaced between customers, which made me feel somewhat nervous and not entirely at ease."

The best restaurants in Naples

Opened by his great-grandmother Concettina in 1951, Ciro Oliva’s ever-packed pizzeria lies in the heart of the pulsing Sanità neighbourhood. This twenty-something whirlwind is constantly inventing novel pizza combos such as smoked provolone cheese, taralli crumbs and fresh basil to compliment the exemplary standards. His latest brainwave is a gourmet menu served at a kind of expanded chef’s table in the next-door annexe where you get a seemingly endless series of different slices of pizza with crazy-brilliant toppings such as crema di vongole (clams), French butter and anchovies, smoked salmon and caviar and prosciutto and artichokes.

The 14 best places to eat in Naples

Sink your teeth into La Sanità, a chameleon of a rough-cut neighborhood that Neapolitans wouldn’t even set foot in a decade ago, at its hippest pizzeria. The Oliva family has been whipping up dough here for 70-odd years, but it’s the creative spin of visionary young pizzaiolo Ciro Oliva that morphed his family’s business into a hot spot – and La Sanità into an unlikely foodie hub. Pair an artichoke-filled pizza-dough bun or artisanal pizza with a local craft beer or small-production Campanian wine to experience Neapolitan paradiso on earth.

In the 1954 film L'Oro di Napoli, Sofia Loren sold fried pizza from a basso (a street-level room), something Concettina Flessigno Oliva had already been doing since three years earlier. This is now one of Naples's most highly acclaimed pizzerias, and Oliva’s great-grandson's menu includes all the usual culprits as well as pizza wedges based on local in-season ingredients. Twenty-seven Pulcinella masks by renowned local artist Lello Esposito hang in the entrance, and a Nativity scene is perched over the proceedings in the long hall.

Fat, bubbled-up crusts, lakes of melted mozzarella and artisan toppings are the hallmarks of the pizzas served up by master pizzaiolo Ciro Oliva in this fabulously popular pizzeria in the La Sanità neighbourhood. It’s busy at lunch and dinner, but it’s worth braving the queue for the fresh-from-the-oven crispiness of the pizza bases and the imaginative toppings – lemon zest, salmon, fried clams, you name it. The owner’s family have been making pizzas for four generations – and it shows.

What and where to eat in Naples, Italy

Over the past 10 years, new restaurants, such as Ciro Oliva’s Pasticceria Poppella pizzeria and Isabella De Cham Pizza Fritta, have started to bring in Neapolitans and tourists, reshaping Sanità’s character, while pizza place Concettina ai Tre Santi began a policy of only employing from the immediate area and funding cookery classes for underprivileged local children.

Weekend in Naples

After consulting our lengthy list of candidates (Fratelli di bufala, Pizzeria Sorbillo, Starita) we decided on Concettina ai Tre Santi (Via Arena della Sanità, 7 Bis), a place where FF had eaten last summer and still talked about with a dreamy look in his eyes. We weren’t disappointed: we split two pizzas, one a simple Margherita (always a good benchmark to judge a pizzeria by) and one called Il Sole della Sanita’. Both were divine, to die for, possibly the best pizza I’ve ever had; the ingredients were of the highest quality (Naples is the place to go for mozzarella and tomatoes, btw – will get to that) and ridiculously fresh, the crust was fluffy and tall and proud and delicious, and the yellow tomatoes on Il Sole della Sanita’ were a thing of true beauty, cooked in the oven until soft and collapsed and sweet.

The 7 Best Pizzerias in Naples

Pizzeria Concettina ai Tre Santi (Sanità) – This trendy pizzeria, located in Naples’ historic Sanità district, has made a name for itself thanks to the personable, ambitious Ciro Oliva, a fourth generation pizzaiolo who took over his family’s place when he was just in his mid-20s and introduced imaginative, modern variations of traditional Neapolitan pizza. Take, for example, the “San Gennaro”, with tomato sauce, smoked provola, tarallo crumbs, basil, and extra-virgin olive oil and a crust stuffed with Neapolitan salami and more smoked provola. Once considered one of the city’s most dangerous areas, the neighborhood of Sanità has seen a resurgence–and part of it can be attributed to the success of this family-owned spot.

An art historian's approach to things to do in Naples, Italy

No article about Naples would be complete without a mention of the food, which really does make up an important part of the experience. Pizza is unquestionably a centrepiece of local cuisine and something to schedule in for a few dinners. Not a fan of lining up, we tend to eschew the most famous tourist spots, but did test Concettina ai Tre Santi in the Sanità area, where, however, we didn’t sit down inside but went to the “street food” side – a super tip… most of the famous spots have a take-out side where you can get faster service, and in this case there are tables with proper plates and cutlery, if you can snag a spot (which we did!).

Be prepared to wait if you go at peak times, but this neighborhood favourite in Rione Sanita is our second favourite pizza in town. They also serve other dishes than pizza and have a lovely back garden to sit and eat in if the weather is cheery. After you've stuffed yourself beyond reason, head over the road to Poppella and eat a Fiocco di Neve with a cup of coffee to complete the orgy.

One of the newer, more modern pizzeries on this list, Tre Santi is found in one of our favourite neighbourhoods in Naples: Rione Sanita. The father and son team of Antonio and Ciro pride themselves on maintaining tradition in the food they serve, whilst daring to adding something different and experiment with ingredients. This means Tre Santi is a good option to come and try a different topping to the classic margerita and marinara after you’ve wandered around the streets of this lesser-visited neighbourhood.
