This new-generation osteria with a mod, bright and breezy look and a menu of ultra-traditional Neapolitan favourites is good for a lunch or dinner break if you are exploring the Spaccanapoli area. They do a mean ziti alla Genovese but also worth trying is the hefty paccheri ripieni e fritti, paccheri pasta tubes which are stuffed with meat, sultanas, pine nuts, pecorino cheese eggs and breadrumbs and then fried. Slightly less digestion-challenging options include ‘Eggs in Purgatory’ (in a tomato sauce), black pork sausage with chips and a selection of salads.

Located right off the main drag of Spaccanapoli, La Locanda Gesù Vecchio is an intimate and casual dining space with yellow tablecloths, a wooden bookshelf, wine bottles, grapevines and all that good stuff. Food is proper, no-fuss, exceptionally executed Neapolitan classics like pasta and peas or eggplant parmigiana, and it’s a welcome haven from the bustling, mediocre food-centric streets of the centro storico.

Two locations (the other is on the same street, at number 4), both with two service shifts, the first at 7 pm and the second at 9:30 pm. Some may frown a bit, but it seems like a venial sin in the face of the pleasantness of the evening, marked by a pleasant convivial atmosphere and a high-level offering. Among the highlights are mozzarella in a carriage, bean and escarole soup, Genovese ziti, mixed pasta with potatoes, smoked provola, and grated Parmesan, eggs in Purgatory, cod in a casserole.

Tucked just a stone’s throw from Piazza del Gesù in the historic center, this family-run trattoria walks that perfect line between rustic and refined. It feels like stepping into someone’s home — if that someone happens to be an excellent cook with a knack for warm hospitality. On my mission to find the best restaurants in Naples, Italy, I came in for lunch and started with the parmigiana di melanzane, which was less stacked and more folded into itself, silky and rich without being greasy.
