On the second floor of a building across from the covered market, steps from the Piazza Grande, this simple, typical trattoria is in the very nerve center of the city. Here you'll find exemplary preparations of the region's crown jewels: tortellini in brodo, tagliatelle al ragù, and roasted meats. Wash it down with Lambrusco, as locals have for centuries, and save room for the zuppa inglese (layered sponge cake with custard), which is terrific.

The Trattoria Aldina is a restaurant that offers traditional Emilian dishes, and it’s located in Modena inside a building that houses other businesses, so it’s actually quite easy to miss the entrance. But the restaurant, its address being Via Luigi Albinelli 40, is off the beaten path going towards the city center and as such it’s frequented largely by locals, which is all the more reason to dine here, surrounded by friendly staff and true, homemade local dishes. The atmosphere in here makes it so that it feels like you’re about to have a hearty Sunday meal at an aunt or a grandma’s house, and since the restaurant is on the first floor, the overall appearance of the place is that of a real Italian house.

L’Aldina”, come viene chiamata affettuosamente da tutti i modenesi, è più di una trattoria, è un salto indietro nel tempo. Si accede al ristorante dalla porticina di un palazzo posto davanti al bellissimo mercato gastronomico coperto dell’Albinelli ( lo abbiamo raccontato qui), poi si salgono le scale e si entra in quello che sembra l’appartamento di una nonna che non ha mai cambiato l’arredo di casa. Aperta nei primi anni ’70, è probabilmente la trattoria più famosa di Modena, frequentata da molti turisti grazie anche all’endorsement di Bottura su Forbes nel 2019.

A trattoria opened in the early 1970s, on the first floor of a historic building in the centre. One dines contemplating the Art Nouveau lines of the Albinelli Market from the windows, where in the morning locals do their food shopping before starting the daily ritual of preparing the tortellini, tagliatelle, and lasagne that will soon be on the table. In addition to these, there is gnocco fritto, boiled meats, roasts, pork knuckle, zuppa inglese, tenerina and sour cherry tart.

Trattoria Aldina – this was one of the most fun dining experiences I’ve had in Europe!. Located just across from the market, up the top of some shops, this very unassuming trattoria was completely packed for Saturday lunch, with a line of people on the stairs waiting for a table when I arrived close to 1pm. But, being a solo diner, I was immediately taken to a shared table, sitting across from an art historian in town to see the art in the Cathedral.

This restaurant alone would be enough to entice us back to Modena the next time we’re in Italy; it’s amazing!. We arrived around 12-minutes before opening time for lunch, and there was already a queue of people ahead of us. When the doors were finally opened, we were brought into the ’50s style Italian apartment-cum-restaurant of our dreams; which, I might add, was entirely full about 2-minutes after opening!

L’ambiente è “casereccio”, con i tipici tavoli di legno e le tovaglie a quadrettoni, sui muri alcuni piatti di ceramica decorata sono esposti come trofei. La Trattoria Aldina prepara piatti della tradizione locale e tra i miei preferiti ci sono i tortelloni di ricotta con la pancetta e il cotechino con il purè ..

Trattoria Aldina – A bit tricky to find, this super old-school restaurant is a great place to feast on dishes that are as traditional as their somewhat-dated decor. Grab a quick plate of tortellini in brodo or tortelli di zucca, or post up for a full-course Modenese lunch with frittelle, gnocchi con ragù, and guanciale con polenta.

I didn’t get a chance to eat here personally, and I’m very sad about it. Hidden on an upstairs floor of an apartment building overlooking Mercato Albinelli, I love the secretive charm and have heard the food is excellent. They don’t take credit cards though, which is why we ended up choosing a different spot.

Trattoria Aldina, Via Luigi Albinelli, 40, is located across the street from the Mercato Albinelli, and upstairs. They focus on typical Modenese cuisine. In the past, there was generally no menu, but there was often at least one person there who speaks enough English to read it to food travelers.

For a more locally typical dinner or lunch as Emilians would expect, try the “Aldina Trattoria” or go to the Albinelli indoor market for a good sandwich!. For a fancy dinner with good wine, the “Antica Moka” in the city centre, definitely the place for you.

Some of the best places near the Mercato Albinelli food market include Trattoria Aldina Modena, just across the street and Bar Schiavoni Modena, just outside of the market. Also nearby is one of the best restaurants in Modena Italy, Hosteria Giusti Modena.

Aldina’s restaurant is at the first floor of a pastel color house, in the center of the city, in via Albinelli, near the market. To come inside you have to ring the bell and go upstairs. Once entered you realize immediately that time has stopped.

Just across the street from the Albinelli market, Trattoria Aldina is a bustling place with communal tables and lots of good cheer, as well as traditional Modenese specialties such as tortellini, tortelloni and tagliatelle al ragu.
