In 2015, I added “Eat at Osteria Francescana” to my bucket list. One random day years later, we said “fck it, we’re doing it.” We woke up at 3am, furiously refreshing our browsers as every reservation vanished before our eyes. Finally, Ryan got one and we cheered like little kids. We didn’t even have plane tickets. But that moment became the start of everything. We started selling our stuff. Prepp...

Reviews Summary

Osteria Francescana offers an extraordinary gastronomic experience, blending art, emotion, and Italian tradition. Diners rave about the creative and surprising flavors, the impeccable presentation, and the attentive service. While the tasting menu and wine pairings are highly recommended, some find certain dishes lack a definitive 'wow' factor compared to the overall high expectations, but the immersive journey and chef's personal touch make it a must-visit destination.

"Dining at Osteria Francescana is an experience that transcends the idea of a traditional meal. From the first amuse-bouche to the final surprise, every dish is a story — full of creativity, tradition, and emotion.

The tasting menu we enjoyed was a thoughtful journey. Dishes like “Brodo in Bloom” and “La Cipolla Sogna il Caviale” immediately set the tone: refined, imaginative, and deeply rooted in Italian memory. The presentation was exquisite, with artistic plating and playful elements throughout.

Each course showed Bottura’s unique ability to transform humble ingredients into masterpieces. “Nella Foresta” and “Mare Nostrum” stood out as highlights, both visually stunning and full of layered flavors. The Jazz Duck: Improvvisazione sull’Anatra was rich and soulful, perfectly matched with an excellent Italian wine pairing (we especially loved discovering the Prünent Nebbiolo from Valli Ossolane).

Desserts like Gelati and Surprise, Surprise! closed the experience with fun, nostalgia, and technical brilliance.

Beyond the food, the service was outstanding — precise but never stiff, always attentive without being intrusive. Every member of the team contributed to making us feel both special and at ease.

Osteria Francescana is not just a restaurant; it’s a place where food becomes art, memories are created, and dining reaches its highest expression.
If you have the chance, it is absolutely worth the journey.

5 stars, without hesitation."

"We got the last minute call from reservations team that we get a table. The restaurant is in the old town well decorated but dark( even in lunch). 12 courses 350 per person is ok for 3 Michelin. Service is Perfect but lack of human touch. We tried the 30 years anniversary menu. Tbh I was expecting more and have been wanted to come here but most of the dishes were flat. They were good but of 1 from 12 gave me wow factor. So it is nice to go but not wow for me and my partner 😭. Massimo (head chef) came and say hello and tell story of many dishes to every table ( this was so nice to hear) I think if the service also tell a bit story will also be very interesting ( they were quite rush when explaining) in conclusion not no.1 world best restaurant in my view."

"These days, a lot of fine dining feels totally out of touch with the real world. But Osteria Francescana is different. It’s real. It’s a reminder that food can still mean something deeper.

Chef Massimo Bottura isn’t just a genius in the kitchen — he’s one of the most humble, inspiring people we’ve ever met. Every dish he and the team sent out was a message, a conversation about everything we take for granted. Every plate was insane in flavor, but it also hit you in the heart. It was a quiet rebellion against excess, a reminder that nothing should be wasted, and everything has value.

The kitchen runs almost completely zero-waste. Ingredients are sourced hyper-locally, and you can feel the respect for every farmer, every fisher, and every piece of the chain.

And despite the three Michelin stars, the global fame, and the massive respect he gets he spent more time talking about his community soup kitchen projects around the world than about himself. That says it all.

We left not only feeling full and tipsy with amazing wine pairings but also super inspired. Meeting Massimo was a reminder that you can be at the very top of your game and still stay grounded, kind, and completely focused on what matters.

Our family is beyond grateful to have had this experience. We’ll be carrying it with us for a long time."

Osteria Francescana: A Meal at the World's Best Restaurant

Down the slippery, cobblestoned streets of Modena, Italy, a salmon-colored building—inauspicious save for the Italian flag above the entryway and covered with tape that reads #1—is home to the best restaurant in the world, Osteria Francescana, the kind of place that only opens up its reservations three month in advance. It's a quiet mid-morning when I land at the marble doorstep, and few are in the streets. A group of three arrives; then another pair, all of whom flit by the doorway for a furtive glance, before taking cover in the shade of the buildings opposite the door.

Modena and Emilia-Romagna welcome the 70th

The venue that consecrated the area as a global gourmand destination is the three-starred Osteria Francescana of Massimo Bottura who, in addition to the cult address in Via Stella, manages the Al Gatto Verde, il Cavallino di Maranello and Franceschetta 58 restaurants where chef Francesco Vincenzi has recently started working with the Modena Prison where inmates grow the vegetables that are then used in the kitchen. Also in Modena, the star shines on Erba del Re, while the Bib Gourmand Antica Moka offers homemade pastas and excellent local recipes, occasionally revisited.

Chef-proprietor Massimo Bottura has done stints with Adrià and Ducasse, takes inspiration from music and literature, and pours all these influences into creating some of the fanciest plates in all of Italy while remaining true to his Modenese roots. The restaurant contains only 12 tables and although it's possible to order à la carte, most everyone opts for the 12-course tasting menu with the accompanying wine pairing. One signature dish is 5 stagionature di Parmigiano Reggiano (five “stages” of Parmesan, served in different textures and temperatures).

Take a right fork in the road off Corso Canal Chiaro as you move away from Modena’s Piazza Grande into via Stella and pretty as it is, in its inimitable Italian way, it’s not where you’d first think to find a 3* Michelin restaurant voted 3rd best in the world in London last Monday at the prestigious San Pelligrino World’s Top 50 Restaurants Awards.
