Reviews Summary

Diners praise Antica Trattoria della Pesa for its authentic Milanese cuisine and charming, historical ambiance, noting the impeccable service and classic dishes like ossobuco and cotoletta. However, some find the prices to be on the higher side, with a few reviewers suggesting the quality may not always match the cost.

"Before coming to Milan, read several articles and watched a few YouTube videos on the best restaurants for local Lombardian/Milanese cuisine. This place was mentioned in every single one and did not disappoint. Be prepared for Milanese Viel, Saffron Risotto and various other cuts and chops. A must visit when in Milan in my opinion."

Ben Monks

"Excellent Milanese cuisine in a very charming historical setting. Tables are set with monogrammed linens and silver. Dishes are brought to the tables on a cart by the waiters.
Recommended to us by a local, the Antica Trattoria Della Pesa, was a a wonderful choice for lunch. An opportunity to enjoy great food and timeless elegance."

J Duffy

"This trattoria has a classic vibe, with pure and typical Milanese cusine. This is a Milan highlight for me. Authentic and delicious food, impeccable service. The servers are all career waiters, older men (I say this time and time again, best sign), and I was blown away by the attention to detail, every detail of the interiors and utensils were beautiful. You can tell everyone who worked there takes pride in what they do. The tortellinis, with ricotta cheese and spinach, with butter and sage are such a simple dish and so so well done. The gnocchi with gorgonzola cheese are a plate for those who enjoy a good strong in palate dish, even though amazingly balanced. And I recommend to book much in advance!!!"

The Best Restaurants in Milan in 2024

It has become a tad expensive now that it has turned into a tourist destination, but Antica Trattoria della Pesa is still one of the best places to get a glimpse of the Milan of old. Placed between Chinatown, Gae Aulenti Square, Porta Garibaldi train station, and steps away from Fondazione Feltrinelli Foundation – it stands in stark contrast with its ultramodern surroundings, which have become a symbol of “new” Milan, with its perfectly preserved décor harking back to the 1880s. Ossobuco con risotto alla milanese (saffron risotto with ossobuco), cassouela (pork offcuts and cabbage stew), and brasato con polenta (braised beef with polenta) are all sensible options, but make sure to have the foamy zabaione before you leave.

This restaurant could easily pass as an antique shop with its copper pots on the walls and decorative plates - a decor that feels all the more fitting when you learn that Antica Trattoria della Pesa first opened its doors in 1880. The risotto here is served without fanfare, but is satisfying and well priced. If you aren’t all riced out at this stage, I recommend also trying the risotto al salto.
