Reviews Summary

Al Matarel is celebrated for its authentic, traditional Milanese cuisine and cozy, family-run atmosphere, offering a genuine taste of old Milan. Diners rave about signature dishes like osso buco and handmade pasta, though some note the prices can be on the higher side for the portion size and quality.

"I don't even know where to start. The best meal I've had in Italy. Oldschool dishes. Everything is at top level - just as it's supposed to be. Like your Italian grandma's dream dinner."

"The food is just amazing, tradicional Milanese food as good it can be.

This restaurant was recommended, and we wanted to try some authentic Milanese food.

We started with the thick cut of salame (tollone di salame della casa), it was so soft that you could spread on the bread.

Then we has the polenta with Gorgonzola (Tortino bollente di Gorgonzola). Thus thing... it is amazing!! The piping hot dish creates a crust where the polenta and the Gorgonzola fuses together making that one of the best dishes of my life.

For mains, I've ordered the ossobuco (Ossobuco in gremolada con risotto) the risotto was everything right. Creamy, al dente, tasty. The ossobuco was perfect, could cut with a spoon, the bone marrow could be accessed by a special spoon. The juice of the cooking was pure collagen. Just perfect.

My wife had the tortellini with pumpkin, was very light and very well balanced flavours.

The portions were massive, we stopped before the dessert."

"This is the best place for traditional Italian food in Milano.
It’s a family restaurant opened in 1962 and still run by the family with Mrs Elide on top of the restaurant to make sure that everything is prepared well in the kitchen and guests are very well served and look after properly.ravioli selections was delicious and tiramisu also tasted so good plus recommended Prosecco,my friend had it dish from polenta which is very characteristic of the cuisine of the Milano region, definitely will be back sometime next year."

Where to get 8 (great) plates of risotto in Milan

Another traditional trattoria, Al Matarel has been run by the affable Nonna Elide since 1962. Its pride and joy is its osso buco - a secret family recipe that hasn’t changed with the generations and is roasted and broiled for more than three hours before being served with a heaping of saffron risotto. Melt in the mouth tender and surrounded by a sea of buttery rice, this dish should always - as the restaurant’s owners recommend - be followed by a walk through Milan’s historic centre and a glass of good grappa (a strong Italian liquor made from distilled grapes).

20 BEST RESTAURANTS in Milan

It looks rather ordinary from the street compared to the fierce competition in the area, but inside you will find a welcoming family-run restaurant, with bottles of wine displayed on small wall shelves, bright colors, and well-executed traditional Milanese food. Any of the pastas are delicious, although they are known for their delicate stuffed tortellini, and of course they have a top-of-the-line osso buco. Tourists tend to miss it, so you can usually get in for lunch or dinner without a reservation and find yourself surrounded mostly by locals.
