ZipaCafé is a cocktail bar born with the prospect of making ‘Madonna dell’Idris’ come alive for tourists, with a totally new air: colours in full vintage style and reminiscent of the old town, candles, lanterns, friendliness. From the little terrace below the entrance to the restaurant, there is a breathtaking view from which to admire the stones in all their splendour. Here, cocktails are made with selected and sought-after materials and there is a wide range of wines from all over the world, with flavours that marry the history that transpires from every single stone present.

Zipa Cafè is a relaxed, charming spot just off the main trails of the sassi, perfect for a casual break any time of day. Part café, part light-bite bar, it’s the spot to come unwind over afternoon espresso, panini, or a cocktail at aperitivo hour. Seating is mostly outside amid crumbling tufo walls and irregular rock that make you feel part of the landscape itself, as if you’ve stepped into a quiet corner of Matera that hasn’t changed in centuries.

This bar takes advantage of its hidden and cozy position beneath the Church of Saint Mary of Idris to create an open, relaxed atmosphere that lives in perfect harmony with the Sassi of which it is made. You won’t find chairs in this bar but rather all kinds of pillows and cushions scattered around where you can sit and sip on your pre-dinner drink.

This trendy spot overlooks the ravine with bean bag chairs scattered amongst the rocky alcoves. The main section was full when we went at 7pm on a Saturday, so they fitted us in on a little piazza next door. This isn’t the place to go for a Spritz—they have a small menu of seven unique cocktails.
