Trattoria Lucana is celebrated for its authentic, home-style Italian dishes and warm, family-like service, making it a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike. Diners rave about the delicious regional specialties and the cozy atmosphere. However, some reviewers have noted instances of rude staff and long wait times during peak hours, suggesting a need for patience or early arrival.
"Delicious, unpretentious, nourishing food. I am vegan and had absolutely delicious vegetable dishes and their bean stew (crapiata) was perfect. The servers were so lovely and food came out at the perfect speed. We went two nights in a row. During busy season/weekends, make sure to come 10 minutes before opening to wait in line outside, as there’s usually a crowd."

"Great trattoria with great tradionale local cuisine, no booking required but get there for opening time if you are going for dinner, we arrived 5 minutes before opening and there was a queue of about twenty five people. The service, wine and of course the food are
fantastico. If staying in Matera for a couple of nights , Recommend"

Said be one of Mel Gibson’s favourite eateries during the shooting of the Passion of the Christ, Trattoria Lucana runs on more than just the endorsement of a celebrity. It too comes highly recommended by local residents and is one of the more reasonably priced restaurants in the city. Try a glass of Aglianico or Primitivo wine made with local grapes paired with a hearty meat dish or rich pasta.
Behind the Scenes of the Tower Art Museum and More Experiences I Had in Matera ⋆ BLocal
I was surprised to find that all shops in the area were mysteriously closed; so, I drove to the city centre to grab a bite, ending up at a beautiful tavern, Trattoria Lucana, which served regional specialities. Historically, Basilicata was a poor and isolated region, so the cuisine is one of a traditional nature, using wholesome and rustic ingredients, boasting of vegetarian dishes aplenty.
