Reviews Summary

Osteria al Casale is lauded for its beautiful cave setting and delicious, creative Italian cuisine, with many calling it a highlight of their trip. Diners particularly love the unique dishes like truffle ravioli and burrata, and the stunning views from the terrace. However, some guests have noted that service can feel rushed, and portion sizes may be perceived as small for the price.

"A wonderful restaurant located in beautiful caves. We arrived at 7pm without reservations (recommended) and had to wait until 8pm to be seated. But it was so worth it. The food is delicious and the atmosphere provides a special experience. I ordered a mixed salad and the Parmesan ravioli with truffle sauce - SO good! For dessert, I had the white chocolate cheesecake with strawberries, which was also delicious. Highly recommend!"

"Very good food. Service was nice as well. Overall, a very good dinner with a good view. I recommend. Main course prices are around 15€ up.
Also, keep in mind that you might have to wait a few minutes for free tables. But i was lucky, didn’t have to wait at all"

Solyda Thourn

"Great restaurant and Matara beautiful seating outside pretty view. Great food and wine can’t say enough. I felt bad not giving it a four. I would say a solid 3.5 but definitely worth going to."

Discovering the Magic of Matera

The next night we chose Osteria al Casale (Via Madonna delle Virtù, 29) for dinner, which is located along the main road on the southeastern edge of town overlooking the Gravina gorge. After our pre-meal passeggiata and ceremonial aperitivo of spritz with a bowl of salty olives at I Due Sassi Cafe (Piazza del Sedile) we casually made our way to the restaurant. There were a handful of tables set up on the stony outdoor dining area along the street with views of the Murga park, and since we were once again early we took the opportunity to order another aperitivo to sip on as we soaked up the last bits of evening light.

Sitting pretty in a quiet street in the heart of the city, Osteria al Casale's parasol-flanked tables are the perfect spot to twirl creamy spaghetti on a balmy afternoon. Meanwhile, airy indoor seating comes with bar-facing seating, braided lights and shelves stocked with local wines. The restaurant focuses on "cucina povera", roughly translated as serving provincial dishes that champion fresh ingredients.
