This relaxed, new-generation osteria is from the same stable as brilliant little Pitti Gola e Cantina in Piazza Pitti; the dynamic young team have opened another wine bar in Via Giusti (north-east of the Duomo) and a new restaurant in Via San Niccolò. Here, in the Oltrarno location and against a background of exposed brickwork, crisp, white linens and attentive service, the seasonal, Tuscan-based menu offers the odd twist: top-notch charcuterie, cauliflower flan with aged parmesan fondue, stand-out tagliolini with wood pigeon ragù, and melting, slow-braised beef. Bistecca alla Fiorentina (which the chef quite rightly refuses to serve more than ‘medium-rare’) is another reliable option.

Florence suffers from over-tourism, so we can’t really deny (or blame) the fact that restaurants have notoriously grumpy restaurant service. But Osteria dell’Enoteca couldn’t be more different. They serve one of the best steaks in town, all while the staff smiles and cracks jokes when explaining where they source their charcuterie and how proud they are of the wine they carry.

This is the younger sister of popular Osteria dell’Enoteca in the Santo Spirito neighbourhood; the menu is similar, but the look is quite different and the atmosphere is a little more informal. It’s a cosy space done out in moody greys with a mod-rustic look, colourful paintings of Florence and its monuments on the walls, and a carefully curated jazz soundtrack. As in the Osteria dell'Enoteca, Nicola Chiappi’s Tuscan-centric menus here are based on market availability and local traditions and change with the seasons.

The Oltrarno district of Florence is known for some fantastic restaurants, and the beautifully decorated Osteria dell'Enoteca is regarded as one of the best restaurants in Florence. A mix of traditional Florentine cuisine and innovative touches give their food a spark of something special. For the daring, I recommend Tatara con Puntarella, steak tartare with a chicory sauce, typical of the region but not for everyone!

It’s not the place you want to go for a hearty meal, but the food is amazing.” If you can’t score a seat at this tiny place, head down the street to their restaurant Osteria dell’Enoteca. “If I want to go somewhere, have a nice meal in a nice atmosphere, with great service, great wine, and not spend a fortune…it’s the best thing going right now.

While not the cheapest place, the crostini here is fantastic, and meals are served on marble plates–it’s the ideal spot for a special occasion or those on a honeymoon. If you try anything here, make it the tiramisu. It’s drenched in fabulous liquor and and created with an almond biscotti that can’t be beat.

The south side of the river Arno – which runs through the heart of Florence – is an up-and-coming area, full of artisans and some of the best restaurants in town. This includes Osteria dell’Enoteca. Locals normally leave Florence on the weekend to head to the local villages for their Sunday lunch.
