Gelateria dei Neri is probably the first gelateria that I discovered in Florence when I first came to the city 15 years ago. It was still in a different location and lining up for your gelato wasn’t really a thing back then. Gelateria dei Neri is a Florence institution, but the top quality gelato is worth the queue at busy periods!

Or favorite gelateria in Florence proper, without a doubt, is Gelateria dei Neri. It was our favorite when we visited in 2013, and it was the favorite of my entire family during our visit again six years later. In fact, during our five days in Florence (two of which weren’t even in the city), I visited this one four times.

We absolutely love the ghiaccioli (lollipops) made by Gelateria de’ Neri, a few steps from the Uffizi. They serve artisanal ghiaccioli – fresh fruit on a stick, with no sugar added. Pure freshness and delicious at any time of day!

Go to Neri if you’re out drinking or exploring around Santa Croce. Many consider Neri the best gelateria in Florence and we can attest to the fact that they have the best salted caramel gelato that we have tried in Florence.

Gelateria dei Neri was hubby’s second favorite gelato in Italy after Gelateria Edoardo. The service was quick and friendly plus they had tables, which is great if you need a break from walking while you enjoy your gelato.

Closed between Christmas and New Year’s, we missed Gelateria dei Neri on our December 2019 trip. This is Tom’s favorite gelato shop on this side of the Arno. (I love it, too.) He finds them to be the most friendly.

Formerly a hole in the wall located a few buildings down, the gelateria is now bigger and busier. There’s often a line outside, but don’t be put off, because if you can stand to wait, you’re in for a real treat.
