Reviews Summary

Buca dell'Orafo is celebrated for its authentic Tuscan cuisine, especially its homemade pasta and unique appetizers, all served in a charming, historical cellar setting near Ponte Vecchio. While many praise the attentive service and cozy atmosphere, a few diners found certain meat dishes to be less impressive or overpriced, and the intimate space can be a bit noisy.

"This hidden gem exceeded all expectations! The pasta was absolutely incredible—hands down the best tortellini I’ve had in Italy so far. Every bite was fresh and full of flavor. The service was just as impressive—warm, welcoming, and genuinely attentive. It’s not the most well-known spot, but it absolutely deserves more recognition. If you’re looking for authentic Italian food with a friendly atmosphere, this place is a must-visit!"

"Booked this cozy restaurant for 6 and was only somewhat impressed. The pastas were good but the steak quality wasn’t over the top and wasn’t worth ordering. It was a bit chewy and the quality was a little less than mid. Overall, I would recommend this place if you only get the pasta."

"tl;dr please do not come here, stay away!. Food was overpriced, and just not good compared to other restaurants we’ve had in Florence/Italy. What an utter disappointment and let down!

We read online and found this place on a few lists and were so excited to have another great authentic meal in Florence. But, this place was anything but good.

The butter and anchovies were ok but it basically comes ready made and needs to be plated.

The porcini mushroom pasta was just awful. It didn’t have much mushroom taste and was a bit soggy.

The fried chicken and zucchini flowers was not fried well and had a pretty overwhelming oily taste. The chicken was not even a whole part it was just various parts that range from a single drumette to bits of leg that didn’t even make a whole one. The chicken also had a certain taste that bordered on stale and was not fresh in our opinion.

The Cacio e pepe was ok but we’ve definitely had better. I will not disagree with another reviewer who said it was really pretty bad. There was not much pepper taste and the pasta itself was way too al dente that it seemed undercooked.

Really do yourself a favor, save your money, and don’t waste a meal here. It was so disappointing and such a let down. This is especially so after having had such a great meal at another Florentine institution, Sostanza.

BE WARNED! STAY AWAY!"

12 Best Restaurants in Florence, Italy From Bistros to Michelin Stars

Whilst it is basically one street down from the iconic Ponte Vecchio bridge (swarming with tourists even in the pouring rain), this local Florentine is a favorite of ours, and is set up in the most authentic setting — a converted wine cellar!. (Once a former workshop, and these are known as a ‘buca,’ hence the name.). Entering the restaurant you walk down a couple of steps and are seated at one of the few tables, where exposed bricks and low ceilings greet you, and bottles of vino line different crevices.

Insider tips on where to eat, shop and explore in Florence

Off the Ponte Vecchio in one of my favorite shortcuts (tip: to avoid crowds head down this alley and you’ll pop out into the Uffizi courtyard and in front of one of the most scrumptious restaurants I’ve ever laid taste buds on). Granted, the service can be painful and sometimes, you might be in for a show if the owner and his partner are in the same room. Although, if you don’t know Italian, you’ll have little idea of the hilarity that ensues.

The Best Restaurants in Florence

Inside a 13th century palazzo just footsteps from Ponte Vecchio you’ll find Osteria Buca dell’Orafo – a cozy restaurant where you can experience traditional Tuscan cuisine. This place isn’t just cozy but also unique, in fact, in ancient times, the city’s historic goldsmith shops were located here, and that’s where the restaurant’s name comes from. The restaurant is located just below street level and offers an authentic Florentine atmosphere.

The location would be modest if it were not that this “buca” is adjacent to the Ponte Vecchio, and its entrance is almost hidden, below street level. It’s impossible not to feel the influence of the magical atmosphere that corners of Florence like this one can give. Once seated at the tables, we advise you to plunder the antipasti section before immediately jumping to the main course.

Best Bistecca in Florence, Italy

One of my recent favorites is Buca dell’Orafo, which is located on a small alleyway off the Ponte Vecchio. It’s between the Arno, the Uffizi, and the Piazza della Signoria. This tiny restaurant offers a few tables, a stern but efficient waitstaff, and the most delicious pasta I’ve ever had in Florence, especially in the city center.
