Perhaps this title may sound impertinent, but I have no doubts about it: the place itself will enchant you, as a first aspect. The Hostaria Savonarola is located under the arcades in front of the homonymous square, in the shadow of the Castle, and, not surprisingly, in front of the statue of the famous Dominican preacher Girolamo Savonarola (Ferrara 1452-Florence 1498), who was burned at the stake for religious ideas considered heretical and which then rose to the rank of symbol of republican freedom and a precursor of Lutheran ideas at the same time. Once inside, you will find yourself in an ancient environment, both for the kindness of the staff and for the atmosphere: the sauce salami hanging, the dark wood furnishings, the iron lamps, the large mirrors, the prints on the walls, the wine bottles on display, the old ceiling beams.

Between the Estense Castle and the Ducal Palace, under the loggia overlooking the square with the statue dedicated to the Ferrarese friar Girolamo Savonarola, a very popular sign (booking is advisable, and in any case, two service shifts are carried out) for enthusiasts of typical cuisine. The repertoire essentially does not deviate from the best-known classics, starting with the lavish selection of cured meats and cold cuts that open the meal. Then, the inevitable macaroni pie, pumpkin cappellacci, oven-baked pork shank with potatoes, salama with mashed potatoes.

It's the bar that looks a little like a greenhouse set up right against the moat with tables outside. With a "make your own panino" option on the menu, friendly waiters, and an ideal location literally in the shadow of the Castello, it makes a perfect lunch stop.

I had them topped with ragù at Hostaria Savonarola next to the castle and they were delicious!. The price for this dish and other first courses should be 11-12€, so pick the restaurant you like, but mind the price!
