Reviews Summary

Scirocco Sicilian Fish Lab is celebrated for its incredibly fresh, perfectly fried seafood served in convenient paper cones, right in the bustling fish market. Diners rave about the authentic street food experience, generous portions, and good value, though some mention occasional toughness in certain fried items or a slightly salty seasoning.

"We went on a Wednesday around 5pm, it was not busy. The service was quick and staff was nice. The seafood we had was fresh, fried and seasoned perfectly. We had two glasses of wine, one of their “homemade lemonade” and two mixed fritture: the total was 27.50€. It was the perfect snack. The only thing that could’ve been better is the music (not a big “pop” music fan where it doesn’t belong)."

"We stop for lunch and were not disappointed.
As every nice place is now full of tourists but how can I complain when I'm one.
The quality of the food is excellent. The fried fish is tasty, fresh and a reasonable quantity.
The arancinetti were a real treat, strongly recommend them.
And the swordfish caponata was refreshing and brought memories of the Mediterranean.
Price is adequate and staff was very kind despite the horde of tourist."

"This small fish fast-food spot is right in the city center, on a street near the main square where during the day there’s a fish market. The smell of fish is noticeable, but you can get used to it. The place had many positive reviews and always seemed busy, so I decided to try a fish’n’chips style cone.

The staff was very friendly. The first time I went, I was told they didn’t serve fries, but I could get the fried cone on its own, which was fine. My order arrived within a minute or two, and it came with a plate, napkins, and lemon wedges. The fish was fresh, the batter crisp, and the quality of the seafood was excellent. Even as someone who normally doesn’t enjoy fish and seafood, I liked everything I tried.

It was so good, that a few days later I went back. The cone was just as good as the first visit, served the same way. This time there were more small octopus pieces, which slightly dominated the mix compared to shrimp or calamari and other fish, but it was still very tasty.

Overall the food is fresh, high quality, and consistently well prepared. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to try some seafood in a casual, fast-food style setting."

In the heart of the fish market, you'll find the best fritto misto (fried seafood mix) in the area. Walk up to the little counter on the stone balcony overlooking the action and place your order for a paper cone of fried seafood made with the lightest and crispiest batter. They even offer the choice of an all-vegetable option or "no spines" ( senza spine) if you prefer your order not to have the small whole fried fish.

Festa di Sant’Agata: Celebrate Street Food in Catania

When Marco Timpanaro, a young, visionary, dynamic Sicilian food entrepreneur, decided to bring back the tradition of Sicilian street food, he picked the iconic Catania fish market as the best location to do so. It was not by coincidence that he decided to convert an old butcher shop into a street food kiosk where every day, fresh dishes are prepared just overlooking the fish market and its many lively vendors. His desire and dream was to bring awareness to the fish street food tradition and the fish market in Catania, as part of Catania’s heritage.

Catania A Tavola: The Best Restaurants in Catania

Scirocco Sicilian Fish Lab – There’s a good chance there will be a line outside this old butcher shop (hints to its past can be found in the white tiles, meat hooks, and bright red awning) on the edge of La Pescheria, but it’s worth the wait. Here, you can order various types of fried seafood, served in a traditional paper cone. There are a few tables, but it’s really meant to be street food: order from the takeout window and eat while exploring the rest of the iconic market.

10 places to eat at and things to do in Catania, Sicily

You’ll find this little hole in the wall in the midst of the fish market, on the site of an old butcher shop, with white tiles on the walls and meat hooks still on view to the public. These guys fry the best of Sicily’s seafood on the spot, wrapped in traditional straw paper cones, enjoyed amongst the heady mix of an Arab and Mediterranean market atmosphere. Full of flavour, really moreish, and very fresh – it’s easy to get carried away and keep ordering more cones.

Take the Fish, Leave the Cannoli: Sicily, Italy

Right on the edge of the market is the Scirocco Sicilian Fish Lab, a little kiosk where all that fresh seafood is fried on a spot. We ordered the “boneless fish” cone and a half-liter of Sicilian white wine, the perfect snack for more people-watching and Godfather-quoting at 11am. Calamari, shrimp, cuttlefish, anchovies and one tiny little octopus hanging on for dear life, lightly battered, freshly fried, spilling out of a paper cone with a fat wedge of lemon.
