Reviews Summary

Weißes Rössl is celebrated for its authentic South Tyrolean and Italian cuisine, with diners praising the delicious traditional dishes like Wiener Schnitzel and canederli soup. The rustic, charming ambiance adds to the experience, although some have noted issues with service clarity and promptness, particularly regarding reservations and kitchen closing times. Despite occasional service hiccups, the overall consensus points to a rewarding culinary experience with friendly staff and generous portions.

"This restaurant is an institution in Bozen and we were very happy to celebrate our wedding anniversary there. The food is traditional and delicious. There are various dishes for vegetarians (with a vegetarian section in the menu). The front of the restaurant is nicer and more atmospheric than the extension at the back. The prices are reasonable and this place is certainly worth dressing up for and making a special effort to visit."

"Traditional local cuisine, beautifully decorated with pairings and lot of small details of an alpine Brauhaus. The menu offers daily specials and many local favorites. Food is delicious and even though it’s a popular spot, that was quite packed, it arrived rather quick.
It took us some time to get seated."

Jordan Racek

"Perplexity recommended this restaurant to us. I instantly knew that it was a good recommendation because there was a line to get in and there were mostly locals. A very large restaurant with a great hustle and bustle to it. The local plates dominate, and so it was very easy to order.

I chose the canederli soup and the milanesa and my wife mini gnocchi with a cheese sauce to die for.

Had a great crispy local beer on tap as well.

We were driving through from the dolomites down to Venice and it’s just so wonderful in Italy how you can stop in a local town and eat significantly different food two hours away. Just wonderful. Dog friendly too"

24 Hours in Bolzano through the Eyes of a Local

Historical taverns such as Cavallino Bianco, Batzen Braeu, and Voegele offer traditional South Tyrolean dishes like Knoedel (bread dumplings), Schlutzkrapfen (half moon-shaped ravioli filled with ricotta cheese and spinach, topped with melted butter and Parmesan), and mouthwatering desserts like Kaiserschmarren (shredded pancakes with red currant jam, raisins and powered sugar). If you lean more towards some Italian food, Restaurant Argentieri offers a menu that reflects Italian culinary traditions, and Casa al Torchio-Torgglehaus in an 1900 old historical building offers an extensive pizza menu.

Dove mangiare a Bolzano

I ristoranti tipici dove mangiare a Bolzano

Weekend in Bolzano

Deciding we still had room for dinner a few hours later, we headed to Il Cavallino Bianco (also recommended by Chiara) where we sampled spaetzl (spinach-potato dumplings similar to gnocchi) and served with speck, pork roast with potatoes, and more canederli. All of the food was off-the-charts amazing, as one would expect food in Christmasland to be. Expect recipes for homemade pretzels and canederli on the blog soon.

Bolzano - Great Food and Wine in Italy with Italiaoutdoors

My first stop was a walk-by of a restaurant I knew would be closed, Cavallino Bianco. This is a very traditional establishment, in operation since the 12th century, initially built to serve the vendors in the surrounding markets. It still has shared tables, and the extensive menu features many time-honored local specialities, including leberknodel, bauernplatte, deer stew, and goulash.
