While most diners rave about the pasta and meat dishes, a few have noted instances of unfriendly service and a lack of English spoken by some staff.
"This is a hidden gem of a restaurant, where locals come and eat delicious food.
The tortellini con crema di parmigiano was absolutely delicious, as was the cotoletta alla bolognese.
A must and we will certainly return.
Thank you for a tasty food and pleasant evening."

"We went here on a recommendation, and very happy we did. It is just off the street down a little alley blink and you could miss it: watch for the sign. From the moment we entered we were made to feel at home and welcome. I with my intolerances, had no problem at all. Indeed they said were is the problem we can accommodate you. The menu is good and typical of the area: you are going to eat well, to say nothing of the wine list. Good food, wine and a warm welcome with a smile: what more could you want. We are going again and next time I will not eat breakfast before."

Restaurants in Bologna
At the bottom of an alley off Piazza Maggiore, this unassuming place—known to locals as simply "Da Gianni"—is all about hearty traditional food. The usual starters are on hand—including a tasty tortellini in brodo—in addition to daily specials; bollito misto (mixed boiled meat) is a fine option here, and the cotechino con puré di patate (pork sausage with mashed potatoes) is elevated to sublimity by the accompanying salsa verde. The two unadorned rooms are usually crowded both at lunch and dinner.

051 22 04 81 (a wonderfully friendly, comfortable restaurant with outstanding Bolognese food - no printed menu, you just choose from the selections of the day and I’m still dreaming of a celery and parmesand salad I had here. It’s fun to go with a small group so you can try lots of stuff. And save room for the endless desserts and grappa afterwards!)
Must-Eat Traditional Restaurants in Bologna
This street was once famous for its key and lock makers - the very patrons who frequented Trattoria Gianni when it opened in the 1950s. In the decades that followed, its neighbours and patrons may have changed, but this restaurant has not. The interiors, all vaults and low arches with very thick walls, are unadorned and unfussy.
