The hardest thing about living in Bologna is choosing where to eat dinner. Spur-of-the-moment decisions are out – all great places require reservations, at least a few days in advance (more for some) – and there's simply too much sensational from which to choose. Trattoria Bertozzi is one of my top three restaurants.

Another among the best restaurants in Bologna, opened by the Bertozzi brothers Fabio and Alessandro and managed by a passionate team of culinary and wine connoisseurs, is a true local gem. Located outside the city centre near the Bologna stadium, expect to find here all the classic of the traditional Emilian cuisine. Make sure not to miss their sausage curly screw pasta known as “gramigna alla salsiccia,” tortellini and tortelloni in broth or with ragù, meatballs with peas (polpettine all’antica con piselli) and the succulent “scottadito” lamb (agnello).

Located in a more residential part of Bologna but reasonable enough to reach from the centre via a long walk or taxi is one of Bologna’s perfect trattorias. This local institution is run by a small team of enthused culinary and wine experts dedicated to showcasing their region. Every aspect here is to be appreciated, from the warm service from the staff, quirky decor, their outfits and richly flavoured traditional dishes which define Emilian cuisine in Emilia-Romagna.

Located just out of the center of town, Trattoria Bertozzi is most definitely worth the trek. The menu is loaded with standouts but there is one pasta dish that will bring you back to Bertozzi again and again: the signature gramigna Bertozzi: a corkscrew-shaped pasta doused in a potently delicious saffron and Parmigiano cream sauce and intermingled unctuous guanciale. pasta has a very peculiar shape, and Trattoria Bertozzi is the perfect place to try it!

If you venture west outside Bologna’s main ring into Saragozza, a more local neighbourhood, you will find the charming Trattoria Bertozzi. The owners Fabio and Alessandro are childhood-friends-turned-business-partners, who opened Bertozzi in 2007 and have been busy ever since. The cuisine at Bertozzi faithfully honours and respects traditional Bolognese dishes, using only high-quality locally sourced ingredients to bring to life old-school recipes.

Located just outside the city walls (roughly 10 minutes away by bus from the centre) is Trattoria Bertozzi, a charming little eatery serving delicious dishes typical of the area. Everything we had was excellent, especially the lasagne and meat platter. For something more unusual, try the gramigna bertozzi, a pasta originating from Emilia-Romagna with guanciale (pig cheek), zucchini, and saffron, topped with parmigiano reggiano shavings.

Trattoria Bertozzi is a touch off the main route (approximately a 15-minute walk from the city center), but the trip through tree-lined residential lanes persuades those who make the trip to one of Bologna’s most traditional trattorias. Because there are just a few tables available, reservations are required. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, but the gramigna, a sort of hollow, corkscrew macaroni, is one of the best in town.

If looking for a typical Bolognese restaurant, with some of the best pasta in Bologna, away from the crowds, and the tourists, this is the place. It’s easily at the top of the Bologna top 10 restaurants that tourists don’t know about. Set outside of the city center, close to the football stadium, tiny Trattoria Bertozzi squeezes in a handful of tables.

Bertozzi is one of Bologna’s true neighborhood spots serving up a warm and convivial atmosphere alongside quality-driven traditional cuisine with a valid champagne fridge to pair with the myriad pastas. The saffron corkscrew gramigna and braised meatballs are a must. A bit off the beaten path but worth getting outside the crowded historical center for.

Head off the beaten track and travel 15 minutes out of the centre along tree-lined streets until you reach Bertozzi, one of the best traditional trattorias in town. Experience fully authentic Bolognese dishes drawn from the owners’ childhoods and enjoy the extensive wine cellar that accompanies the detailed menu.

This awesome place is full of fun and laughter as well as some amazing food for brunch. You may need to use your GPS to find this spot off the beaten path on Andrea Costa but you will be glad you did. The tortellini and all their pasta, sauces, and whatever else you choose are all made with products from Italy.
