What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Il Gelatauro is celebrated for its high-quality, artisanal gelato with unique, traditional Southern Italian flavors, earning it international acclaim. While many praise the creamy texture and delicious taste, some find the flavors could be more intense or deep, and a few reviews mention issues with portion size or perceived value for cones.
"We saw this as we walked towards the university area, it looked very local and traditional. They had a good range of flavours and well priced.
The chocolate was intense and rich in flavour.
We sat in to eat them as they had good AC."
James Topping
"Quite good but not the best in Bologna, the texture was great although the flavors could have been more deep. Recommend trying pistacchio or nocciola"

"Old school ice cream shop. A little out the way but worth the trip for s selection of traditional gelato in unusual flavours. This was our third bowl in as we wanted to try so many flavours. All tasty but the Pistachio, ginger and pumpkin cinnamon deserve a special mention!"

Sporting a cute logo of its namesake gelatauro (a bull with ice-cream-cone horns), this Calabrese-American venture keeps students from the nearby Università di Bologna pouring in day and night for exquisite flavours often made with caramelised seasonal fruits.

Giovanni Figliomeni, with a past as a building contractor, began making ice cream out of passion, then in 1998 he opened Gelatauro, introducing his own interpretation of ice cream to the Bolognese scene; in 2022 the Financial Times included the place among the 25 best ice cream parlours in the world. Beyond the international recognition, Figliomeni's ice cream is of high quality and is strongly anchored to the ice-cream maker's southern roots, specifically from Calabria, which influence its marked fresh and lively flavours.

For gelato, don’t miss Cremeria Santo Stefano my favorite gelato in Bologna for extremely interesting flavors and perfect creaminess/sweet balance, Stefino Bio for fascinating vegan and organic flavors which fool you into contemplating veganism, Gelatauro for classic gelateria vibes and gelato made wholly artisanal with passion and a touch of Southern Italian flavors (the owner from Calabria) and Gallieria 49 if you are obsessed with pistachio and figs like me- they do a pistachio granita that is probably the closest I’ll get to having the real deal in Bronte, Sicily. ALSO, Cremeria Cavour and Sorbetteria Castiglione.
