Reviews Summary

Diners rave about Grassilli's authentic Bolognese cuisine and intimate, historic ambiance. The homemade pasta, especially tortellini and tagliatelle al ragù, receives consistent praise. While the service is generally warm and professional, some mention that newcomers might not always receive the same warmth as regulars. The wine selection is also a highlight, complementing the traditional dishes perfectly.

"Came here during my visit in Bologna in early Dec 2024. The first day I just passed by and saw good reviews here, so tried my luck but in vain. Then I booked a table for one right away. It doesn’t disappoint. The moment I came back 2 days later, the waiter who took my booking already remembered me and showed me my table! Nice ambience, friendly service, delicious food. Love their tagliatelle al ragù. Another hidden gem in Bologna!"

Veronica Cheung

"Me and my partner ate here for lunch, and had a lovely time - served by both the male and female waiters we felt both welcome and cared for. Overall a charming restaurant, serving delightful Bolognese classics with lovely wine choices."

Clare

"Such a gem. From the outside you can’t see much but from the inside it’s like a time capsule. The interior with all the wood and pictures as well as the lighting create a warm atmosphere. The music in the background is not too loud and fits to the place 100%. We had local cold cuts and parmigiano as antipasti and the Ragù. All the dishes including dessert were in point. The wines as well as recommendations were really good as well.
If you‘re looking for a more quiet and dim space, Grassilli is the place!
10/10"

The Best Restaurants In Bologna, Italy

This gorgeous, old-fashioned restaurant – all wood panelling and vintage photos on the walls – has always been popular with the theatre crowd. But while the people-watching is refined, it’s hard to take your eyes off your plate – especially if you order the cotoletta alla Bolognese: a schnitzel-like slab of veal, soaked in meat broth, layered with prosciutto and slathered in melted parmesan.

This restaurant, in a quiet side street, is one of Bologna’s best for flavour and atmosphere. Opera singer Francesco Grassilli, founded it in 1944 and the walls are covered with photos of musicians who’ve eaten here. Alongside classics like tortellini or passatelli in broth, the menu offers three types of veal cutlet, smoked goose breast and ratatouille.

Bologna food: What to eat and where

There are two dishes you absolutely must try in Bologna before leaving. The first is tortellini in brodo; small pockets of pasta, hand-filled with veal and then served in a hearty broth. The second is the aforementioned tagliatelle al ragu – the original spaghetti bolognese featuring tagliatelle pasta topped with slow-cooked beef in a rich, tomato sugo.

Must-Eat Traditional Restaurants in Bologna

In the name of butter and parmesan, Grassili does solid Bolognese dishes with some French touches. In the traditional section of the menu, you’ll find tagliatelle with ragù, tortellini in broth and a variety of Bolognese cutlet (veal breaded and fried, topped with cooked ham and a Parmesan cream). The best restaurants in Bologna to book right now

Tucked away in a small street near Piazza Santo Stefano lies a time capsule white tablecloth institution loved by Bolognesi. Newcomers, in all transparency, aren’t treated with the same warmth as their regulars. Still, their rich, saucy ragu tagliatelle more than makes up for what some could easily experience as unwelcoming service.
