One of the well-known restaurant is for sure Da Mimmo in Via Colleoni where you can taste pizzas made with raw materials protected by Slow Food, as instance pizza with stracchino cheese from Orobie Valleys, rosemary and lard from Bergamo or pizza with “Fiaschetto” tomatoes from Torre Guaceto and Caciocavallo Podolico from Basilicata. In March 2012 “Buongustai Bergamo” Club tributes “Mimmo” Amaddeo, who founded the restaurant in 1956, and it gives him the certificate of merit as the oldest and most appreciated pizzeria in Bergamo.

Lina and Mimmo - who in the 1950s regularised everyone - paid no attention to the labels but to the results. They asked everyone for commitment, asked for people to give their best, held a joint responsibility agreement with each worker and then urged them to grow. They urged them to go home, to build families, to obtain a driver’s license, they continually urged them to go forward.

If you’re up in Città Alta, the best pizzas in my opinion are found in Da Mimmo and Ristorante Pizzeria San Vigilio (across from the top funicular station). If you’re down in the lower city, you’ll get scrumptious pizza at Vasinikò or Trattoria Caprese. The king of gluten-free cuisine in Bergamo is at Ristorante Pizzeria Byron.

There are many places to get a bite in Bergamo from pizza shops to fine dining restaurants. We chose something in the middle as we wanted to sit and enjoy a delicious local pizza. They have many items on the menu but what caught our attention was the Seasonal Pizza – Pizza with eggplant sauce, fried eggplants, and fresh shrimp.

You’ll find the pizzeria tucked just outside the main cobbled streets of Bergamo Alta at the bottom of the street that leads up to the hilltop castle ruins. The sign leads to a staircase which, in turn, leads down into a courtyard and to the pizzeria itself.

Locals in the city would highly recommend tourists to try Da Mimmo in the Citta Alta. This restaurant was established way back in 1953. The place has maintained its traditional and refreshing atmosphere that both the locals and tourists enjoy.

For dinner, our local friends recommend us the old school family restaurant Da Mimmo. Mimmo Amaddeo, who started the place in 1960’s, welcomed us to the restaurant together with his wife. We got a table in the big garden in the yard.

A great spot for breakfast, lunch, or dinner in the upper city. With a decent selection of handmade pastas, you’re sure to find something you love. I tried a creamy walnut and asparagus ravioli that was phenomenal.

Da Mimmo Restaurant is also a famous historical restaurant is in the upper town. It’s a little bit more expensive, but the quality of food is excellent. They also are very kind and equipped for babies.
