This laid-back bar is in the middle of the action next to Jaffa's busy flea market. It draws easygoing locals and tourists of all ages, who come for the tasty, affordable food and drinks and the lively outdoor patio. The menu is mainly local, with some Asian dishes thrown in; the service is efficient and upbeat; and the furniture looks like it's been randomly lifted right out of the flea market.

Shaffa Bar, on Nakhman Street, is a great spot for casual dining, cocktails and live music. For a more relaxed atmosphere, Paspartu on Rabi Khanina Street has a wide selection of craft beers and bar snacks. For a more decadent end to your two days in Jaffa, head to The Kishle Bar, which lies in the lobby of The Setai Tel Aviv and serves a range of fine wines and masterfully crafted cocktails.

For live music, it’s hard to beat Akbar, The Container, or Shaffa, while The Cuckoo's Nest and Beit Kandinoff are bars-cum-art galleries with a particularly fun atmosphere. Most bars offer Happy Hour deals, usually between 6 pm and 8 pm, which are an excellent opportunity to try some Israeli beer: Goldstar, Malka, and Maccabee are all popular. There are also a few notable high-end restaurants in Jaffa.

Find the alleyway that leads you to Shaffa Bar (3, Nakhman Street 1), a breakfast and lunch spot by day, café and bar at night. In the morning, people read newspapers, drink lemonade with rose water, and eat ultra-fresh salad-dominated breakfasts; at lunch, there’s grilled eggplant with tahini. Mizrachi Ottoman jazz music by Harel Shachal and the Ottomans on Mondays is a later-hours highlight.

Another indicator of a good bar is when punters are happy to go it alone. Such is the case of Shaffa, where I met Itai, a late 20-something who schleps out from Herzilya every Monday night to hear the live band – in this case Harel Shachal and the Ottomans – play.
